Former Little Athletics participants have won thirteen medals in Athletics at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, a sensational effort by all!
Sally Pearson (100m hurdles), Steve Hooker (pole vault), Alana Boyd (pole vault), Jarrod Bannister (javelin), Benn Harradine (discus), Fabrice Lapierre (long jump), Jared Tallent (20km walk) and the men's 4x400m relay team (Joel Milburn, Kevin Moore, Brendan Cole and Ben Offereins (ran heats only)) all took out the gold medals in their events. Other medallists were Kim Mickle (javelin), Luke Adams (20km walk), and Claire Tallent (20km walk), who all finished with silver medals, and Dale Stevenson (shot put) and Lisa Weightman (Marathon), who won bronze.
The athletes are amongst the two-thirds of the Australian athletics team at the Commonwealth Games who participated in Little Athletics when they were younger.
In particular, Little Athletics ambassador Sally Pearson showed great courage and commitment to win the 100m hurdles after being disqualified earlier in the meet from the 100m for a false start after she had crossed the line in first place. Further, at the request of the Australian team management, Sally took to the track in the final of the 4x400m relay in order to bolster the team's medal chances, running herself into a state of exhaustion on the final leg in the team's fifth place finish.
Little Athletics congratulates the following former Little Athletics participants on their performances at the Commonwealth Games:
