I Dream of Delhi Clinics

13 Sep 2010

With 20 days left to the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, Tasmanian athletes are getting into the mood, with a series of camps and clinics around the state.

At present, 30 aspiring athletes from throughout Tasmania have descended upon the Domain Athletics Centre for a camp designed for Power (sprinters, throwers and jumpers) athletes.

The camp is centred around the AT/TIS Development Squad, which includes many national medallists from recent Australian titles.

Several high level interstate coaches have been brought in for the camp, including;

  • Dr John Boas - coach of Olympic silver long jump medallist Gary Honey and Commonwealth games medallist David Culbert
  • Gus Puopolo - coach of current Australian discus record holder Benn Harradine and coach of Commonwealth Games discus champion Scott Martin
  • Bohdan Babijczuk - Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Melbourne Football Club

These highly sought after coaches are in addition to TIS State Performance Co-odinator Peter Fortune who famously coached Cathy Freeman to gold almost 10 years ago and AT coach of the year Evan Peacock.

The camp continues to Wednesday and will conclude with the camp attendees assisting at a series of clinics for youngsters, in the "I Dream of Delhi' clinics.  These clinics aim to inspire Tasmania's upcoming generation of track and field athletes and to get them excited about the forthcoming XIX Commonwealth Games.

'I Dream of Delhi' clinics are a collaborative effort between the Tasmanian Commonwealth Games Association, Tasmanian Little Athletics Association, Active After School Communities and Athletics Tasmania.  All Tasmanian school students are welcome to attend these free clinics, running between 10am - 1pm on the following days.

  • Wednesday 15 September - Domain Athletics Centre (Hobart)
  • Thursday 16 September - St Leonards Athletics Centre (Launceston)

Friday 17 September - Dial Athletics Centre (Penguin)
