WOMEN’S 800 METRES BATTLE SET TO CONTINUE IN HOBART

The most enthralling battle of the 2007 Australian athletics season will continue in Hobart on Friday night with both Lisa Corrigan and Tamsyn Lewis confirming that they will run the 800 metres at the Tasmania’s Forest Industries Graeme Briggs Memorial Athletics Classic.

The two were the stars of the national series meet in Sydney on 13 January before repeating the dose at the Canberra A Series meet two weeks later.

After the two had run separate races, Lewis winning the 800 metres and Corrigan the 1500 metres, at the pre-Christmas Telstra Zatopek Classic in Melbourne, both athletes have since been more than happy to go head to head in search of good times.

The results have been more than encouraging with the rising youngster winning on both occasions, but with the seasoned performer not far behind. In Sydney Corrigan won in 2:01.92 with Lewis just .25secs adrift, whilst in Canberra the times were 2:01.59 to 2:02.51, after Lewis had done the pace making herself.

With a pacemaker to be engaged for Friday night, the tussle will again be a highlight of the meet.

And the stars of the distance events at this year’s Christmas Carnival Series have all confirmed that they will run on Friday night.

Tasmania’s Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Donna MacFarlane will don the TIS colours in her pet event the 3000 metre steeplechase, whilst Paul Hoffman (NSW) and Grant Page (Northern Suburbs) will again face each other in the 1500 metres.

Burnie Ten winner and carnivals middle distance king, Collis Birmingham (Vic) will be looking for a big personal best in the 5000 metres.

The Tasmania’s Forest Industries Graeme Briggs Memorial Athletics Classic will be held at the Domain Athletic Centre in Hobart on Friday 9 February from 6.00pm to 8.15pm. Tickets are available in advance from Centertainment or at the gate.
