CLOSE CONTEST HIGHLIGHTS DECATHLON

Visiting athlete, Theodora Spathis of Box Hill Club in Victoria took out the women’s open heptathlon on day two of the Tasmanian Combined Events Championships at the St Leonards Athletics Centre today (Sunday) but it was the close battle between two local athletes, Torin Philpott (North Launceston) and David O’Toole (Newstead) in the men’s decathlon which created the most interest.

Philpott, led after the first five events on day one with 3387 points, but O’Toole quickly responded this morning, winning both the 110m hurdles and the discus to establish a 132 point break, which remained the margin after the pole vault with both men clearing 3.80 metres.

O’Toole then prevailed in the javelin and was close enough to his North Launceston rival in the 1500 metres, to take the title with 6498 points to Philpott’s 6320.

Spathis had a consistent competition over the two days and was able to break the significant 5000 point barrier, to win with a 5089 total. Hammer thrower Anita Millington (NL) ventured into new territory to become the Tasmanian champion, after finishing second to the Victorian.

Brittany Knee (Western Suburbs) produced a personal best score of 4039 points to win the under 20 heptathlon.

In the younger age groups, there were some encouraging performance for the future of combined events in the state, with strong wins to Kylee Gluskie (Eastern Suburbs), Kara-Lee Walker (NL) and Tyler Heron (WS).

Preston athlete Adam Marangon’s quest to reach the qualifying standard for the 2007 World Youth Championships hit a snag when he failed to register a height in the pole vault. It was a disappointment for the talented young Victorian who was progressing extremely well in the competition after seven events.

He gained some consolation by winning the under 18 championship, with Daniel Boatwright (Newstead) being the first Tasmanian.
