COMBINED EVENTERS ENJOY GOOD CONDITIONS

North Launceston’s Torin Phipott and Victorian competitor, Theodora Spathis (Box Hill) are the leaders after day one of the Tasmanian Combined Events Championships at the St Leonards Athletics Centre today (Saturday).

Philpott, with 3387 points, is far from having it all his own way in the men’s decathlon, holding just a 27 point lead over Newstead’s David O’Toole after the first five of the ten events. Another visitor, Athletics Essendon’s Aaron Page is currently in third place.

Spathis had a good day to total 2953 points in the heptathlon, highlighted by a strong performance in the high jump of 1.72m. Although competing in the under 20 age group, Western Suburbs’ Brittany Knee has provided some strong competition.

Much interest centres on the under 18 men’s ten event competition, in which Adam Marangon from Preston in Victoria is attempting to reach the qualifying standard for the World Youth Championships to be held in the Czech Republic in July.

After the first day he is more than 100 points in advance of his personal best, after amassing 3461 points across the five events. His performance on day two will be watched with interest.

In only state championship to be actually determined today, 16 year old Josh Harris (Tamar) surprised everyone, including himself by winning the Tasmanian open 10000m title at his first attempt at the distance.

The national youth squad member only made a late decision to enter the event on the day, winning from John Jago (Tasmanian Masters) and Philip Clarke (Riverside) in 34:36.73.

The Combined Events Championships continue at St Leonards tomorrow (Sunday).
