YOUNG TASSIE ATHLETES SET FOR NATIONAL YOUTH CHALLENGE

Athletics Tasmania today announced its team of 22 athletes to compete in the National Interstate Youth Challenge in Brisbane on 10 and 11 March.

The Challenge comprises a one a side match competition between each of the Australian state and territories in the youth (under 18) age group and covers all the traditional individual track and field events and two relays.

It is a traditional team competition, with athletes limited to a maximum of two individual events plus relays. One athlete represents each team in each event.

AT President Brian Roe said that the Association was excited about the depth of talent in the team, many of the members of which have been participating in the AT/TIS Development Camp at Bicheno this week.

“The Interstate Challenge is different to most other competitions in athletics – it is a great opportunity for our emerging talent to be truly a part of a team, rather than be focussed on individual performance only,” Mr Roe said.

“Our athletes did a fantastic job in 2005 and 2006 in taking the bronze medals, creating a real challenge for the 2007 team.”

Mr Roe said that this year’s Challenge would be staged in conjunction with the Telsta Australian Open Championships and selection trials for the World Championships.

“This gives our youngsters a chance to compete at the same meet as the country’s best senior athletes and also to be able to watch them perform first hand.

He also announced that the team would be led by experienced state team manager, Rosemary Coleman, and AT Board Member, Wim Vaessen.
