COMMONWEALTH GAMES STARS SET FOR HOBART

Two of the happiest gold medallists from last year’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne will headline the throwing event fields at the 2007 Tasmania’s Forest Industries Graeme Briggs Memorial Athletics Classic in Hobart on Friday 9 February.

Scott Martin produced one of the most dramatic victories on the MCG last March, when he responded to the taunts of then leader in the men’s discus, Jason Tunks of Canada, to “make the competition more interesting”.

He did just that delivering a massive 63.44 metre heave to grab the gold from under the brash Canadian’s nose. It was a magic moment for the young Victorian, who previously was better known for his appearances on a series of television commercials in ballet mode.

His athletics career has since taken off in bounds, making a name for himself on last year’s European circuit as a young man to be reckoned with. He finished 2006 with 12 competitions in the shot put over 20 metres and ten in the discus over 60.

Joining him at the Domain on Friday week, will be the Commonwealth women’s hammer champ, Brooke Billett.

The ever-smiling South Australian primary school teacher is remembered for another enthralling victory at the Games, producing another victory over a Canadian (Jennifer Joyce) by just 61cm.

The Tasmania’s Forest Industries Graeme Briggs Memorial Athletics Classic will be held at the Domain Athletic Centre in Hobart on Friday 9 February from 6.00pm to 8.30pm. Tickets are available in advance from Centertainment or at the gate.
