SOUTH TRIUMPHS OVER NORTH IN INTRASTATE YOUTH MATCH

South has defeated North by 42 points, 297 to 255 in the annual Intrastate Youth Match held at the St Leonards Athletics Centre on Friday as part of Launceston’s annual Australia Day Carnival.

It was a close contest throughout the day, with only a few points separating the two teams until the final few events.

South benefited from the maximum points scored by outstanding thrower, Hamish Peacock (Eastern Suburbs) who won all four male throwing events, including his pet events, the javelin with a classy throw of 67.05m and shot with a heave of 17.35m.

The South’s female throwers were also prominent with victories to Nikki-Jo Mathers (ES) in the hammer (35.52m), Danielle McConnell (ES) in the discus (29.06m) and Natalie Daniels (Northern Suburbs) in the shot (9.10m) and javelin (30.25m). Lauren Free (OVA) was a strong winner in the triple jump with a best of 10.75m whilst Chelsea Coleman revealed her potential with a 1.60m victory in the high jump.

Callum James (North Launceston) returned to form to serve the North well winning the 100, 200 and 400 metres treble, the latter in the good time of 53.29 and anchoring the relay team to a close second.

His club mate Bart McCulloch, also had a busy day with individual wins in the two hurdles events, before backing up to score points in both the 400 and 800 metres.

Amongst other strong efforts for the North, Laura Nicholson (NL) won the 100  metres in 13.15 and the long jump with a best of 5.22m.

Sisters Jillian and Meg Lyall (Newstead) demonstrated their potential with victories in the 1500 metres (in 5:04.75) and 400m hurdles (73.75 on debut) respectively.

Doubles were achieved by Southerner Dominic Anastasio (OVA) in the long and triple jumps and North’s Lauren Vaessen (NL) in the unusual combination of 400 metres and pole vault.

Promising middle distance stars from opposite ends of the state Nathan Morey (OVA) and Josh Harris (Tamar) were again well to the fore, picking up wins respectively in the 800m (2:07.78) and 1500m (4:11.81). Newstead’s Oscar Phillips ensured North had the best of the boy’s distances races, running away with the 3000 metres in 10:12.48.

The Match also served as the selection trial for the Tasmanian team to compete in the National Youth Challenge to be held in Brisbane on 10 and 11 March in conjunction with the Telstra Australian Open Championships.

The team which comprises up to 15 boys and 15 girls, competing in a one per side match against each of the other Australian states and territories will be announced later this week.

The National Challenge is itself the final selection meeting for the Australian team to compete in the World Youth Championships in the Czech Republic in July.
