10 Jun 2010

Many of the states best distance runners have just graduated from a gruelling, yet rewarding, training camp at Port Sorrell.

Following the Banjo's Tasmanian Road Running Championships on Sunday, 22 athletes headed to Camp Banksia on the the tiny seaside village of Port Sorrell for the three day camp.  Training included fartlek sessions on the golf course, recovery runs on the beach and local trails, plus several core strength classes.

Athletes were joined on the camp by Australian 1500m record holder Sarah Jamieson.  After a career that includes three Olympics, Commonwealth Games silver and many years competing internationally, 'Jamo' took some time out to share her experiences with the upcoming tallent of Tasmania.

Also on the camp was Athletics Australia's Distance Running National Event Coach - Tim O'Shaugnessy.  A former world cross country representative and dual City 2 Surf winner himself, Tim has a long association with distance running all over the world and was an inspiration to many on the camp, sharing his training methodologies and tips on how to get the most out of yourself.

Joining the crew on night one was Peter Brett.  'Bretty' was one of Australia's top distance runners in the Steve Moneghetti and Andy Lloyd era, representing Australia on many world cross country trips and competing in over 60 countries around the world.  Now based in Launceston, he runs a shoe company under the brand of 'Karhu' and spoke to the camp on running footwear and touched on his successful career.

The annual camp was supported by Athletics Tasmania, Tasmanian Institute of Sport, Europcar, Karhu and Skins.
