ANOTHER WORLD YOUTH QUALIFIER FOR PEACOCK
Eastern Suburbs’ thrower, Hamish Peacock, was the best performed Tasmanian on day two of the Australian All Schools and Youth Championships in Sydney today, taking a silver medal in the under 17 javelin with a best throw of 68.29m, just 9cm from the gold medal position.
Perhaps even more importantly the Hutchins schoolboy once again bettered the 68.00 metre qualifying standard for next year’s World Youth Championships to be held in the
It was Peacock’s second silver medal for the Championships, having also finished second in the discus on Thursday.
The State’s other medallist day two medallist was Karinna Fyfe (North Launceston), who despite having appropriately concentrated more on her studies than athletics over recent months, was still able to produce a highly competitive third placing in the under 18 3000 metres, with a season best time of 9:51.32.
Meagan Dunn (NL) made her first ever national final, by running 68.14 seconds to finish fourth in her heat of the under 18 400metres hurdles.
Athletics Tasmania President, Brian Roe said that he was delighted with the performances of the whole team,
“We are achieving a very high rate of personal bests and state records, which is exactly what we are aiming and hoping for.
“What is particularly pleasing is that this is quite an inexperienced team at this level, yet they are producing their best performances in a really competitive environment. This is very encouraging for the future.”
As on the first day of the Championships, there were some excellent results amongst the Tasmanian athletes who finished in the coveted top eight placings in their respective events:
Chris Edwards U18 Javelin (4) 52.40m
Huw Peacock U15 Shot Put (4) 16.58m
Tyler Heron U15 200m Hurdles (6) 27.92
Lauren Free U14 Long Jump (7) 5.18m
Teletha Phillips U14 1500m Walk (7) 7:19.94
Her long jump best effort today, delivered Free’s second state record of the Championships, having also bettered the triple jump mark on the first day of competition.
Young walker, Phillips was also in record breaking mode, setting a new state mark for the under 14 1500 metres race walk.
