TASMANIA AWARDED NATIONAL ATHLETICS EVENT

Australia’s premier athletics competition for primary school students has been awarded to Tasmania for 2007.

AT President, Brian Roe said that School Sport Australia had invited Athletics Tasmania, as its affiliate in the State, to stage its National Primary Track and Field Exchange in Launceston from 29 November to 3 December next year.

It follows Athletics Tasmania’s very successful staging of the Australian Cross Country Championships at Pontville in August this year, which included the SSA Primary Cross Country Exchange.

“It is another recognition of AT’s capacity to host events and represents a wonderful opportunity for northern administrators to organise and officiate another national level competition.

“The Northern Athletic Centre at St Leonards was the perfect venue for the last two Schools Knockout National Finals staged in Tasmania, and will be ideal once again for this event at which we are expecting up to 500 visiting athletes, team officials and supporters.” Roe said.

Mr Roe said that it will provide a busy time in Tasmanian athletics for younger competitors.

The selection trials for the Tasmanian Team will be staged in Launceston in mid October. A series of lead up events will be staged throughout the state to enable athletes to prepare for the selection meet.

“Since we began sending athletes to the Track and Field Exchange, our teams have tended to be relatively small compared to the other states and territories. However with a home competition it will be our aim to have a full complement representing Tasmania,” Mr Roe said.

He said he hoped that this would include Tasmanian athletes with a disability for the first time.
