Tassie athletes find it tough in perth

19 Apr 2010

The Go for 2&5 88th Australian Athletics Championships has concluded with Tasmanian athletes showing promise for the future.

Tasmanian athletes found it tough over the course of the weekend with most slightly behind the their best.

AIS athlete Tristan Thomas was the better of the tasmanian performances coming away with second in the men's 400m hurdles, still well below his best after being hampered by an achilles injury Thomas fought hard to finish in a time of 50.69 seconds. Tristan has been selected in the Commonwealth Games team heading to Delhi later this year.

Also slightly behind his best performance TIS athlete Hamish Peacock struggled to find his range in the men's Javelin Throw. Peacock left the competition without reaching the 70m mark with a throw of 68.23m.

Another TIS athlete in Dannielle McConnell was unable to find her best form on the day in the women's Hammer Throw with a final distance of 51.48. Dannielle has performed well all season and will gain extra support next seaon as she has been included in the U17 national squad.

Joining Dannielle in the national U17 squad is fellow thrower Rebecca Direen, Direen competed in both the Hammer Throw and the Shot Put falling short of her best performance on both occasions. Direen threw 43.73 in the Hammer and 11.01 in the Shot. Direen will also be looking to work hard this winter in preparation for a big season next year.

Todd Hodgetts was close to his season's best with a big distance in the shot put Hodgetts walked away with a final distance of 16.07m.

Abby Chapman ran well in the women's 100m to finish in a time of 12.54 clocking a personal best time, Chapman then backed up to run in the 200m finishing in a time of 25.72.

Attentions now turn to either Cross Country or pre-season training for many of our athletes who will return next season looking to top what has been a great season of Track & Field.
