MORE GOOD RESULTS FROM TASSIE ATHLETES IN CAIRNS

Day two of the School Sport Australia Primary Track and Field Exchange competition in Cairns on Saturday, saw Tasmanian athletes excel again.

Thomas Parry (St Bridgetts Primary) did not let the disappointment of his blocks slipping on the first day of the 12 years multi-event worry him too much, throwing a personal best in the shot put phase of his competition to move up the points rankings before producing a solid run in the 800 metres which proved good enough to take the bronze medal overall.

It was a great day for the Parry family with younger sister Georgia going one better. After dropping back to fourth overall after the shot put, she ran a tactically strong 800m race and set a personal best of 2.40.15.  It was enough to soar her up the rankings to take the silver medal.

Day One high jump gold medallist, Susanna Cox (Landsdowne Crescent Primary) continued to shine, taking fourth place in the 10 years long jump.

The Tassie team in the 10 years girls’ 4x100 metres relay, comprising Cox, Freda Dub, Caitlin Newson and Parry ran well to claim fourth place, an excellent effort considering that Parry was called into the team only at the last minute after Rebecca Wells was injured during the long jump.

The originally selected four had previously been impressive in their heats of the individual 100 metres, each recording a personal best.  Wells only narrowly missed the final after clocking 14.14.

In the 10 years boys multi event, Thomas Gravina (Sacred Heart) had a day of PBs, to finish impressive fourth overall.

Rebecca Direen (Friends) also impressed, making the final of the 12 years shot put, clinching eighth place after throwing the 3kg implement 10.66 metres. Anna Wade (Montague Primary) ran well in the 100 metres in the same age group setting a personal best of 14.02.

St Thomas More’s student Natalea Smith had a strong second day, anchoring  a competitive 12 years girls 4x100 metres relay team which also included Wade, Miranda Allender and Danielle McConnell and also producing a PB of 2.28.64 in the 800 metres race within the multi event competition.

Team Manager Tracey Parry said that all Tasmanians would be proud of the efforts by our young ambassadors,

“Compliments are coming fast from other teams and as a result Tasmanian athletes have proved to be high on the list for other states looking for replacement runners in relays!,” Mrs Parry said.

Matthew Cornwell and Timothy Coad showed the spirit of the competition by stepping in to fill in the 4x100 metres for Northern Territory.

“Both boys showed fantastic Tassie attitude and sportsmanship and ran great relay legs earning the praise of NT team management.”

AT President Brian Roe said that the results were encouraging,

“For Tasmania to win medals in these age groups is good news but more importantly we are delighted to hear that these youngsters have enjoyed the opportunity and managed well the highs and lows that come with first national level competition experiences,” Mr Roe said.

The athletes concluded the Exchange with an excursion and fun relay programme today (Sunday).
