YOUNG TASSIE ATHLETES ON THEIR MARKS IN CAIRNS

The Tasmanian athletics team taking part in the 2006 School Sport Australia Primary Track and Field Exchange in Cairns has commenced competition in fine style.

The highlight of day one on Friday was Susanna Coxs victory in the girls 10 years high jump.  The Landsdowne Crescent Primary School student jumped 1.45m to take the gold medal by 4cm over second place.

Tasmanian Team Manager Tracey Parry said that her performance lifted the Tasmanian Team,

“The kids are having a ball, which is so important for this age group at what is the first major meet outside home base for most of them.  We may be the smallest team but we are definitely the loudest!,” Mrs Parry said.

“Susanna her certainly provided them with something to cheer about and aim for.”

Another ten year old, Rebecca Wells (Mt Stuart PS) made the final of the 200 metres with a big personal best of 28.82.  The Wayne Mason coached athlete followed up with a slightly slower time of 29.09 in the final finishing sixth.

Springfields Garden student, Danielle McConnell threw a 3 metre personal best in the discus to make the final and also finish sixth.

Georgia Parry is currently sitting in third place in the girl’s multi-event with her favourite event of the 800 still to come.  Fellow St Bridgetts’ Primary pupil and brother Thomas Parry suffered an unfortunate "technical malfunction" in the 12 years boys multi event 100m when his starting blocks broke when the gun fired.  He stumbled, regained himself and still managed to come home in fourth place. He will be looking to make up valuable time and point today in the 800m.

Shannon Weedon (Evandale (PS) produced a big PB in the boys 12 years 200 metres running home in 26.24.  Anna Wade (Montague PS) also set a new best with a time of 28.02 in her 200m heat, both athletes missing their final by narrow margins.  Matt Hanson (Riverside PS) in the 11 years 200 metres also recorded a personal best.

Mrs Parry said that the heat has taken its toll on many of the Tasmanian athletes who have struggled to stay cool.  The hot conditions have been tiring, coupled by a strong wind at times.

The second and final day of competition is today (Saturday).
