NATIONAL AWARDS FOR TASMANIAN OFFICIALS

Two of Tasmania’s leading athletics officials and administrators have received one of Australian athletics’ highest honours.

Athletics Tasmania vice president Wayne Fletcher and prominent technical official, Chris Wilson were acknowledged with the Athletics Australia Merit Award at the national body’s annual general meeting in Melbourne today.

AT President Brian Roe, said that in athletics, the award is second only to life membership in recognising an individual’s contribution to the sport.

“Both Wayne and Chris have made significant marks in our sport at international, national, state and club level. Each is highly regarded for the contribution they have made in each of those areas. They are very worthy recipients,” Mr Roe said.

Fletcher is an international race walk judge and is a member of the AA Walking Committee. His more than forty years service to the sport in Tasmania is almost legendary.

Wilson is a member of the panel of Oceania Technical Officials, a recognition of his outstanding qualifications as an international referee. He is a long serving member of the AA Officials Committee.

Both men were senior competition officials at the 2000 Olympics, 2000 Paralympics and 2006 Commonwealth Games, as well as officiating at major events overseas.

The two Tasmanians were today joined as recipients of the Award by Victorian based national athletics figures, Maurie Plant and David Culbert.
