All Sweet for Athletes of the Meet

Final honours from the 2010 IGA Tasmanian Track and Field Championships have been awarded, with the athletes of the meet announced.

Every year an open male and female athlete who competed at the state titles are awarded for their outstanding performance in a single event over these Championships. While one junior female is recognised as being the most promising young athlete.

This year's open athletes of the meet are Tom Beard for his outstanding run on the second day of competition in the open men's 800m final completing it in a time of 1.50.81 a new personal best for Tom. While Beard excelled throughout the championships, winning the 400m and anchoring his OVA relay team to victory in the 4 x 400m, it was his 800m efforts which appealed most to selectors.

After taking out the full deck of sprint titles, Danielle Taylor saved her best for last, with a scorching one lap on the final day of competition in a time of 55.44. Taylor was consistent all weekend, as she produced wins in the 100m and 200m, but her 400m victory in the Lynne Mazey memorial was her pick of the runs for the Western Suburbs sprinter.

The junior Female awarded with the honour was Danielle McConnell from Eastern Suburbs.  The TIS thrower took the award ahead of a large number of quality junior athletes, for her two efforts in the hammer.  Bettering the 52m mark in winning both her own age group and the open state title.

Athletes will have their chance to celebrate was has been a great season of results for Tasmania, at the Athlete of the Year Party on Saturday May 22 at Wellers Inn, Burnie.
