More Medals on Day 3 in Sydney

14 Mar 2010

Huw Peacock joined the medal club on day 3 of the Australian Junior Championships in Sydney, taking gold in the under 20 men’s hammer.

The TIS athlete began the competition with a conservative ‘safety throw’ of 63.74m.  That was the only throw that was measured, as he produced five consecutive fouls for the rest of the competition.  Fortunately the man from Sandford had done enough with his first round effort, to take the win by less than a metre over NSW thrower Damien Birkenhead.

OVA walker Sophie Eberhardt turned heads in the final event of the day, as she won the under 15 women’s 3000m race walk.  The performance brought about a louder cheer by the Tasmanian team than the 400m effort’s of radio stars Hamish & Andy earlier in the afternoon.

Her winning time of 15:05.11 was a minute quicker than she had travelled before.

Silver medals came from Rebecca Direen in the under 17 women shot put.  The Eastern Suburbs athlete twice bettering her personal best, ending the competition with a best of 12.25m.

Clubmate Danielle McConnell also took home silver, throwing 51.71m in the under 20 women’s hammer.

Max Waldron bettered a 26 year old state record in taking third in the under 17 men’s 200m final.  The AT/TIS Development Squad athlete ran 22.24 seconds, to eclipse the record previously held by Troy Bennett, to take the bronze medal.

The best celebration of the day was from sprinter Laura Nicholson.  The North Launceston athlete anchored the under 20 women’s 4 x 100m relay team to a bronze medal, then proceeded to celebrate in similar style to Sally McClellan, who jumped around in spectacular fashion at the Beijing Olympics.

Eastern suburbs middle distance runner Claudia Conley ran the race of her life, coming fifth in the 800m final with an impressive personal best of 2:15.39.

OVA’s Jess Morey ran her best 1500m ever, slicing a massive 6seconds from her previous best.  The team captain running 4:43.81 to finish 6th in a hotly contested under 20 women’s 1500m final.
