The TIS and Athletics Tasmania are acknowledging the emerging standard of field events in Tasmania by conducting a throws clinic at the St Leonards Athletics Centre this weekend.

The clinic, which will cover all four throwing events is organised in conjunction with the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association and sponsor, Bennett’s Petroleum. It will be presented by two of Australia’s leading coaches - Sean Carlin and Peter Lawler.

Carlin, himself a dual Commonwealth champion (1990 and 1994) is coach of current Commonwealth hammer throw queen Brooke Billett, whilst Lawler, who most notably mentored Louise McPaul to a silver medal in the javelin at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics has coached many top athletes over a range of events.

With some of Tasmanias top coaches, they will conduct a practically based series of sessions, which will include observation and analysis of actual competition efforts during interclub and training as well as theory.

The clinic is open to all interested coaches and athletes and will commence at 11am on Saturday (11th) and 10am Sunday (12th November).

State Performance Coordinator Peter Fortune described the weekend as a great opportunity for Tasmanias athletes and coaches to interact with eminent international coaches in a direct and practical way which will pay dividends as a number of our athletes develop towards national and international level.

"Tasmania has an excellent group of throwers and coaches and it gives a wonderful chance early in the season for the athletes and coaches from North West, North and South to work together," he said.
