QUALIFYING SPREE AT SCHOOLS GAMES

A total of 43 national championships qualifying performances from 35 different athletes highlighted the Tasmanian Schools Athletic Games at the Domain Athletic Centre in Hobart over the past two days.

The Games held attracted more than 130 of the State’s most enthusiastic young athletes who provided a continual supply of excellent performances despite the cold and blustery conditions that were often quite unhelpful.

Results were best in throwing and endurance events, with the majority of athletes achieving the entry standards for the Australian All Schools and Youth Championships to be held in Sydney from December 7 to 10, coming from those two event groups.

“Many of the hardest working members of the AT/TIS Development Squad over the winter have been throwers and distance runners or walkers, so it is not surprising to see them dominate the list of national qualifiers,” AT President, Brian Roe said.

“Many athletics and coaching experts have suggested that these areas should naturally provide the best potential for Tasmania in athletics, so perhaps they are being proven correct.”

Mr Roe said it was also pleasing to see some strong performances coming from athletes in the youngest age group – the under 14s. Those in that age group who impressed over the weekend included Lauren Free (Bridgewater S) – 80m hurdles; Teletha Phillips (Geeveston DHS) – 1500m walk, Levi Hunt (Dominic) – 400m and Clive Reekie (Kingston HS) – 400m and 800m.

Amongst the older athletes, others to come under notice with improved performances included Daniel Boatwright (Kings Meadows HS) in the under 16 javelin, Phillip McConnon (Dominic) in the under 15 800m and 1500m and Bart McCulloch (Scotch Oakburn) in the under 18 400m hurdles.
