PEACOCK SHOWS HIS PROWESS ONCE AGAIN

Hutchins schoolboy, Hamish Peacock today continued his re-writing of the records books with an outstanding performance in the under 18 boy’s shot put on the first day of the Tasmanian Schools Athletic Games at the Domain Athletic Centre in Hobart.

His best heave of 18.05m added 18cm to national medallist Todd Hodgetts’s old mark set in April 2005 and continues an excellent run of early season form.

The National Youth Squad member is one of a number of emerging young Tasmanians who have their sights set firmly on the Australian All Schools and Youth Championships in Sydney in December, for which these Games are the principal selection trial.

Earlier in the day in the under 18 hammer, he had been part of a quartet which also included his younger brother Huw, Chris Edwards (Elizabeth College) and Stuart Morse (Calvin Christian), each of whom bettered the entry standard for that event for the Sydney competition.

Others to impress the selectors today included Nathan Morey (St Virgils), Josh Harris (Brooks High) and Peter Kleywegt (Calvin Christian) who staged a great three way battle in the under 18 1500 metres, each being rewarded with significant personal best at the distance. Morey after appearing to drop away from the other two, surged into the lead at the top of the finishing straight to win in 4:07.88, just ahead of the gallant pace setter, Harris (4:08.49) and Kleywegt (4:08.58).

Amongst those who reached the entry standard for the Australian Championships included Phillip McConnon (Dominic) - under 15 800 metres (2:06.73), Daniel Boatwright (Kings Meadows HS) – under 16 javelin (55.32m), Lauren Vaessen (Exeter HS) – under 18 pole vault (2.80m), Lauren Free (Bridgewater HS) – under 14 80m hurdles (13.74) and Teletha Phillips (Geeveston DHS) – under 14 1500m walk (7:38.56).

Competition continues tomorrow (Sunday) from 10.00am to 3.30pm.
