Day 3 wrap from the UTAS Australian All Schools and Youth Athletics Championships

06 Dec 2009

New South Wales athlete Chloe Jamieson has posted a third meet record to secure a stunning hat trick of gold medals on day three of the 2009 UTAS Australian All Schools and Youth Athletics Championships in Hobart.

Jamieson’s record was one of four new championship marks set on an action-packed day of competition that saw records tumble in the under 16 girls 400m, under 14 girls 800m, under 16 girls javelin throw and under 16 girls 3000m race walk.

The 15-year-old Tathra schoolgirl added the under 16 girls 400m hurdles title to the 90m hurdles and 200m hurdles crowns she collected on the opening two days of competition, clocking her third meet record and the fifth fastest time by an Australian female in the event in 2009.

Crossing the line in 59.66 to go under the minute mark for the first time, Jamieson said the record came as a shock.

“To be honest I was expecting a record in the 200m hurdles but not by that much and I was aiming for the 400m hurdles but didn’t think I’d get it so to take that record as well is really cool,” she said.

Jamieson’s record spree follows a stint with Canberra-based coach Matt Beckenham, mentor to international-level athletes Brendan Cole, Lauren Boden and sprinter Melissa Breen.

“It was a good experience to train with Matty B’s squad in Canberra and to train with the older girls has helped me a lot,” she said.

Beckenham said Jamieson was an exciting talent on the junior athletics scene.

“Chloe has just gone ‘bang’ in the last six weeks,” he said.

“I knew she had potential but she has outshone even my greatest expectations this weekend. To break records here at All Schools is pretty impressive but to break the minute mark is just a great sign of things to come.”

Also rewriting the record books on day three at Domain Athletics Centre were New South Wales athlete Hayley Arden in the under 14 girls 800m (2:13.13), Queenslander Wasie Toolis in the under 16 girls javelin throw (47.41m) and Victoria’s Amy Burren in the under 16 girls 3000m race walk (14:18.07).

In taking out the javelin title Toolis eclipsed the previous meet record by over two metres, while Burren slashed an impressive 16 seconds off the previous best mark in the 3000m race walk.

Dominating the action again on day three, Victorian all-rounder Brooke Stratton added a third gold medal to her already impressive collection, taking out the under 17 girls triple jump in 12.40m (w:0.7) ahead of fellow Victorian Rebecca Marchant, whose leap of 12.20m (w:1.3) saw her add silver to the gold medal she took home in the under 17 girls pole vault on the opening day of action.

In what could be a preview of what’s in store on tomorrow’s fourth and final day of competition, Victorian world youth championships representative Jordan Williamsz ran 1:51.85 to take out the under 18 boys 800m ahead of his start in tomorrow’s 1500m.

“I wasn’t coming here for a medal or anything, that’s a bonus,” Williamsz said.

“I just wanted to race against guys my age that will push me so it’s great to go that quick, I didn’t expect it so it’s good signs that I’m getting there. My main goal is to keep progressing and getting stronger so hopefully I’m improving.”

- Jump Start to London athlete Kertisha Thompson (QLD) took out the under 18 girls triple jump with a leap of 12.39m (0.7).
