Secondary Team Named for 2009 UTAS Australian All Schools and Youth Championships

11 Nov 2009

89 athletes have earned selection in the Tasmanian team to compete in the 2009 UTAS Australian All Schools and Youth Athletics Championships to be held at the Domain Athletic Centre in Hobart from 4 to 7 December.

Athletics Tasmania President Brian Roe said that the Association was very pleased with the size and quality of the team list, which is led by World Youth Championships hammer throw finalist, Huw Peacock (Hutchins/Eastern Suburbs).

"This competition is the largest athletics event held in Australia each year and draws together the best talent from around the country," Mr Roe said.

Not only is Athletics Tasmania sending its largest team to the championship in recent years, it is also responsible in staging the event, which was last held in Hobart in 2002.

"It is a challenge for our association and its hard working organising committee to put everything in place to stage the event but even more so for the athletes and their coaches to initially earn selection and then prepare to do their very best come the time of the Championships," Roe added.

The 2009 UTAS Australian All Schools and Youth Championships will attract thousands of visitors to Tasmania for the duration of the competition.

Mr Roe said that around 1500 of Australia's best teenage athletes are expected to take part in the Championships, that will feature teams from all states and territories.  The Championships will also double as the Athletics Australia selection trials for the IAAF World Junior Championships to be contested in Moncton, Canada in 2010.
