Wellington Champs

Wellington Champs are held at the end of the season at Newtown Park for all athletes aged from 7 through to 15 years of age.

This is the only event (apart from the Colgates Games) where you have to pre register.   It's $5 per event to enter Athletics Wellington Junior Champs.

View the meeting rules and programme.  A full programme with lane draws and the names of athletes competing in each event is available for purchase on the day of champs for $5.

Please make sure you work from the timings listed in the programme with events able to run up to 30 minutes early, so don't arrive to warm up and compete at the last minute.

Please note, if you make a final of a track event but can't compete in it due to injury, or for any other reason, then you can't compete in a relay at the end of the day.

It is recommended that you be at Newtown Park an hour before your events as sometimes the programme can run early.  It also gives you time to warm up and marshall.  There will be a marshalling tent for the running events at the zoo end where you need to go to prior to any track event.  You can’t do this before they’re ready for you, i.e. you can’t turn up earlier in the day, you need to wait until they’re ready for your race.  They will call for the various races to marshal throughout the day.  You should do your warm ups before you go to the marshalling area.  Just make sure you keep an eye on what’s happening with the programme so you can see when your event is coming up.

For field events you just turn up at your field event and marshall there.  By marshall I mean let the officials know that you have turned up so they can mark you down as there ready to compete.

If for any reason you are unable to compete please let your team manager know so they can scratch you from your events.

Uniforms

You will need to make sure you are wearing your correct club uniform.  They won’t let you compete if you’re not in the correct uniform (shorts and singlet or t-shirt if applicable).  You will also need your age flash with your name on it so please don’t forget it.  Make sure your correct registration number is written on the front of your age flash.

Spikes

If you’re 10 and older you are allowed to wear spikes.  The spikes need to be 6mm and can be pyramid, cone or Christmas tree spikes.

Individual Trophy Winners and Overall Club Trophy and Junior Club Trophy

A tentative list of the Individual Trophy Winners from the season's interclub series will be posted on the window at Newtown Park on the first day of Wellington Champs.  The trophies will all be awarded the following Sunday from 10.30am onwards.  Please check this window if you think you are in with a chance.  If you are not there to collect your award the following week we will give it to your team manager.

Helping at your Club's Events

Your club is responsible for a specific event during the Wellington Junior Champs - the same event your club was allocated for the interclubs.  Please make sure you are able to help as we need a full team of helpers for each round. We need to make sure all results are taken to the results room at the top of the stand after each round.

Relays

The relays for the first week are the 4 x 100m relays for the 7 to 9 year olds and the mixed distance relays for the 10 to 15 year olds.  The relays on 22 March are the 4 x 100m relays for the 10 to 15 year olds.  If you haven't confirmed that you will be take part in the relay or not can you please do this now.  It will be too hard to sort it out on the day and isn't fair on those who make the effort to come in - so better to pull out now than on the day or the day before.  Email now to say yes or no.

Naming of the Interprovincial Team

We will name the Grade 12/13 interprovincial team at lunchtime on the first week of champs.  This team will travel to the interprovincial meeting at Easter to represent Wellington against all the other provinces from around the country.
