Junior Match Reports 2013/14

Under 12 Lions - Premiers

Congratulations to the Under 12 Lions Premiership team for 2013-14

Round 14

Under 18 - Fitzroy (4) drew UFTG (4)

In an excellent game of baseball between two evenly matched teams we registered a solid draw. Through excellent baseball we shut down our unbeaten opponents in the bottom of the 6th through solid infield outs and a last out K by Billy.

James & Billy did a great job on the mound restricting a very solid line up to only 4 runs (2 unearned), across 6 innings. Tom caught very well registering 5 assists, throwing out 2 runners at 2nd and one at 3rd. Toby, Billy, Riley, Satang and Connor worked hard all day in the infield backing the pitchers. While Nick and Lukas did everything asked of them in the outfield.

The highlight of the day by far was a 9 pitch at bat in the top of the fourth by Nick that showed his mates how to go deep into the count and make the pitcher work hard for an out. This set the standard for the rest of the game and will hold us in good stead as we move towards the finals.

All round it was a great team game, with every player contributing something when called on.

Hits - Connor 2, Billy 1, James 1, Nick 1.

RBIs - Riley 2, Billy 1.

Thank you to Chris for scoring and to our supporters who made the long journey and sat through trying conditions.

Next week we play Cheltenham at home in the final round. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.

Round 12

Under 18 - Fitzroy (7) defeated Werribee (4)

It was pleasing that we picked up where we left off and registered a solid win in the first game back after the Christmas break.

The highlight today was Satang smashing two line drive singles early to get us going, and Nick taking a diving specky in Right Field to help shut things down in the bottom of the last. James took two solid flies in the outfield, hit a double, knocked in two RBIs and shut it down in the last to complete a great game.

All round it was a great team game, with every player contributing something when called on.

Hits - Satang 2, Toby 1 Triple, James 1 Double, Riley 1.

RBIs - James 2, Riley 1, Billy 1, Toby 1.

Thank you to Lisa for scoring and Ingar for umpiring.

Next week we play Malvern/Melbourne at home. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.

Round 6

Under 18 - Fitzroy (11) defeated Melbourne / Malvern ()

The story of the day today was Billy and Riley. Billy went 3 for 3 with two big doubles, a single and 4 early RBIs to get us going in a dominant game. Riley threw 3 scoreless innings, facing only 10 batters for his 9 outs, which included 5 strike outs. Connor came on and closed it down with two solid innings. Toby put in another solid performance behind the dish and everyone did their job in the field. Well done to all the boys for playing the game out right to the end and for treating their opponents with the utmost respect.

Many thanks to Curtis for stepping up from the U/16s for the game and laying down a great bunt early and then coming up with a clutch RBI single late in the game.

Hits - Billy 3 (2 doubles), Tom 1, Curtis 1, Connor 1.

RBIs - Billy 4, James 2, Connor 2, Tom 1, Curtis 1.

Thank you to Lisa for scoring and Ingar and Jordan for umpiring.

Next week we play Upwey FTG at home. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.

Round 5

Under 18 - Fitzroy (10) defeated Werribee (3)

Our infield was the story of the day this week. We turned over two doubles and made several solid outs at first base. Billy, Tom, Lukas, James, Riley and Toby combined to restrict our opponents to only three runs across 6 innings. Connor, Satang, Lukas and Luca caught everything that came their way in the outfield. Our great defence is no doubt a direct result of our hard work at training of late.

Riley and Connor were solid on the hill and Toby was very impressive in his first outing for the season behind the dish.

Offensively we combined for 7 hits, with Tom and Toby registering two singles each while Billy smashed another big double.

Many thanks to Luca Gleeson for stepping up from the U/16s for the game.

Hits - Tom 2, Toby 2 Billy 1 (double), Riley 1, Satang 1

RBIs - Tom 2, Riley 2, Billy 1, James 1, Connor 1, Satang 1

Congratulations to both Billy and Riley on their selection in the State U/18 squad. Two fine players who have been rewarded for many years of hard work in improving their skills and baseball knowledge. We wish you well in your endeavours to be selected in the final teams to compete at the National Championships in January.

Thank you to Lisa for scoring and Jack Freeth for umpiring.

Next week we play Malvern/Melbourne at Kooyong Park. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.

Round 4

Under 12 Cubs - Fitzroy (16) drew with Essendon (16)

We had a wonderful turnout with 9 players when we were only expecting 8. Zoe did a fabulous job pitching, with a very high strike to balls ratio. She also swung the bat very well. We had a terrific performance behind the plate from Flynn. For only his second time catching, he played the position very well. Toby also deserves to be lauded for his first time ever behind the plate. I have to thank both catchers for their excellent effort.

Sunday's game also brought us what was perhaps TJ's finest performance with a stinging opposite field hit, and an amazing catch at second that kept a smoking line drive from becoming a double or more. TJ also managed to keep his focus on calling situations before they happened. Bravo TJ.

Samuel had an amazing effort in left. He took the initiative and backed up plays at third while tracking down both hits to left very well keeping the batters both times to only doubles. Liam continued his improved presence at first, and I fully expect he will be a dominating first baseman before the second half of the season begins. Liam also continues to improve at the plate with greater strike recognition and improved swinging aggressiveness.

James did a great job at shortstop and at the plate. He did exceptionally well keeping his team mates informed of the situational play. Ben is improving dramatically, with good tracking of hits to right field and two very good plate appearances where he did well to go after the pitcher.

Last, but certainly no least, Jack showed terrific composure on the mound. With very little practice but a lot of heart, he pitched very well. I especially appreciated his very brave effort at pitching in what were at times terrible, rainy, cold and slippery circumstances. I expect with more pitching practice, Jack will be a regular starter in the rotation. Though he might not think so, he also had good at bat performances, recognizing balls and strikes very well. Good job Jack.

Overall, we have a lot of work to do when it comes to our mental game, but I would like to point out to the Cubs, that last year it took us almost all season to eliminate 7 run innings. 7 run innings were a regular occurrence almost all the way up to the end of the season. Sunday's games had only one inning where the opposing team had a 7 run inning, and that was because the other team went 35 minutes over the allowed game time maximum of 2 hours...

Under 18 - Fitzroy (7) defeated Newport (3)

Today we got back on the winner's list registering a solid 7/3 victory over the winless Newport. We started like a train, scoring 6 in the bottom of the first after sitting our opponents down 1, 2, 3 in the top of the first with a nice 5-4-3 double play by Tom, Lukas and Billy. Unfortunately we weren't an express train as we stopped all stations for the remainder of the game, only managing to score one more run in the bottom of the second.

Defensively we were excellent. James threw three innings giving up only two runs on three hits, 5 strike outs, 3 BB and a HPB. Connor then had his first outing for the season throwing 4 controlled innings. He gave up only 1 run on 2 hits, 6 strike outs and 1 BB. It was a treat for those in attendance to see him throw his magic number 3 pitch when it was needed.

Our infielders Billy, Lukas, Toby, Tom and Riley backed their pitchers by making some great plays throughout.

Many thanks to Ethan Appleby for stepping up from the U/16s and catching a very solid game for us.

Hits - Billy 1 (double), Tom 1, James 1

RBIs - Riley 1, Billy 1

Thank you to James for scoring and Hearny and Dave Ayres for umpiring.

Keep an eye on the FBC Website to find out who and where we play next week. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.

Round 3

Under 18 - Fitzroy (7) defeated by Upwey FTG (8)

Today we let one slip, giving up 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th to go down 7-8. We played solid baseball for 90 of the 120 minutes, but unfortunately fell at the last. Riley once again threw 4 innings of controlled pitching, striking out 6. Our hitters showed a lot of discipline and patience in the box against a pitcher who threw hard, but erratically. We were disappointed to lose, but walked away knowing that we're a solid unit that can match it with any opponent. Sometimes you need to take a small step backwards to move forward.
Many thanks to Bradley for stepping up from the U/16s and Dan Malcolm for helping us out.
Hits - Toby 2, Tom 1, Riley 1, Connor 1
RBIs - Riley 3, Tom 1, Toby 1
Thank you to Lisa for scoring and to the parents who made the long journey to support us.
Next week we play Newport at home. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.

Round 2

Under 18 - Fitzroy (17) defeated Sunshine (0)

A very solid outing in round 2 by FBC U/18s. We won 17-0, invoking the mercy rule after 5 innings. Riley and James combined to pitch 5 scoreless innings while allowing only one Sunshine hitter to reach 1st base on a BB. Riley struck out 4 and James struck out 3 - a near perfect game.

Billy led the way both offensively, smashing 3 hits (one time nearly decapitating Toby) with 4 RBIs and defensively, making a couple of very solid 5-3s.

Special mention to Connor for smashing a stand up triple to left field. A big thank you to Luke for joining us from the U/16s for this week and well done on hitting the ball well each trip to the plate.

It was very pleasing to see our boys play the game in great spirit, and combine well as a team to register a very strong win.

Hits - Billy 3 (1 double), James 2, Lukas 1, Tom 1, Connor 1 (triple), Luke 1.

RBIs - Billy 4, James 2, Lukas 1, Tom 1, Toby 1, Riley 1

Thank you to James for umpiring, Lisa for scoring and Johnny and Geoff for setting up the field for us.

Keep an eye on the FBC website for next week's opponent and venue. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.

Under 12 - Fitzroy (9) defeated by Werribee (14)

We dropped a very tough game to a talented Werribee side. Duke truly set the standard for pitching, and sans the maximum 60 pitch rule would have comfortably won the game. Phoenix handled his first pitching performance with composure and got his first strike-out. Michael came in and threw strikes to keep us in the game. Our pitchers are really showing real progress working hard on their composure, balance and delivery.

Fielding wise, we had great plays from Zoe at third, Osker at first, Duke in center and Marius at short, staying in front of some very hard hit balls. We were a bit caught off guard in the outfield but Reily, Phoenix, Liam, and TJ settled down better in the later innings. Samuel did well for his first outing at second. Ethan was a standout behind the plate making very good plays on balls in the dirt and communicating well with the pitchers.

I was very pleased to see that the whole batting line up really working hard on strike recognition and composure. Mike was a standout, after a no swing strike out he kept his composure and his next at bat drove in an RBI, swinging only at strikes. Duke also had a lead off hit which would have been a homerun were it not for the ground rule double. Werribee pitchers had a tough time throwing strikes, and as a result our hitters did not get much to hit. As a club we only missed about 10 - 15 strikes, which is very good for players at this level.

Round 1

Under 18 - Fitzroy (7) defeated Werribee (5)

In difficult conditions our U18s played 5 innings of solid ball against an even Werribee team to register a 7/5 victory. Riley threw a controlled 84 pitches through 4 innings, giving up just 4 runs while striking out an impressive 9 and walking only 4. Toby closed it down in the last striking out 1.

Tom was solid behind the dish, while Billy, Lukas and James did what was required in the infield. Satang, Connor, Curtis and Luca controlled the outfield by dealing competently with whatever came their way.

Offensively we were ok, but need to plate runners more consistently. We only managed to score in two of our five innings. Our base running left a bit to be desired. With work, this will no doubt improve.

Hits - Tom 2 (1 double), Toby 2, Riley 2, Luca 1, Billy 1.

RBIs - Curtis 2, Tom 1, Toby 1, Billy 1

Next week we are at home against Sunshine. We will continue to work on our goals of playing the game in the right spirit by respecting our opponents, the umpires and ourselves.
