Round One 2014

With former professional Tayler Rowe scattering two hits over six, Bacchus Marsh posted its first win of the new season, while Bellarine shrugged off a late challenge from Saints to share A Grade ladder leadership after Guild prevailed over Ballarat in a high-quality clash at the stadium.

Down at Presidents Park, the Giants came from a seemingly impossible position to cause a few tremors in the last before coming up just short against Lara Wildcats, which again was treated to a virtuoso all-round game by Cameron Forbes.

 ROUND ONE:   Saturday 26 April
LARA 8 defeated WERRIBEE 6

Coming off a disappointing first-up outing in Ballarat, Werribee started slowly and was looking down the barrel when the Wildcats smacked two in the first and another three in the third in support of another superb start by Cameron Forbes, who strangled the Giants to the tune of two hits over six innings of work.

However, despite Lara forging even further ahead in the seventh, the Giants showed some real ticker in getting after reliever Daniel Anson, who was on the receiving end of a barrage that produced seven hits, a couple of passes and half a dozen runs in the top of a frenetic last innings.

Despite coming up just short of an upset, the Giants would be buoyed by the late recovery that saw Cameron Wilson, Kelvin Hartigan and Daniel Hartigan all make serious contributions in offence against a club that still boasts the playing wherewithal to make a mess of any opponent.

Although Joel Ricketts (three hits and two RBIs) and Jarrod Fraim (two hits) were dangerous with the bat for Lara, the difference in this game was the all-round contribution by Cameron Forbes, who comfortably collected the win whilst posting three knocks and driving in four of his side’s runs.

Invariably able to provide a contest against all comers, the Bears are off to a flier with a three from three record that sees them sharing equal league leadership with Guild.

Although their two runs in the first were scored with two out, the Bears again turned on the offence, with Wayne Visser, Chris Barker, Simon Murry and Jonathon Lowe all producing multi-hit games against some quality pitching spearheaded by ace southpaw Josh Lee – who was among his side’s best with the stick.

It was his counterpart in Murry, though, who dominated this contest in going hitless over six innings of work and allowing just a solitary runner on base before Saints rallied against reliever Jono Lowe in the top of the last – themselves making light of a two-out situation to drive four across the plate to draw level.

The excitement was short-lived, however, as the Bears jumped on youngster Jordan Isbister, with Barker driving in the go-ahead run to cap what was another impressive all-round game by his club.

After a dignified pre-match ceremony in honour of our fallen servicemen and women, it was an inauspicious start for the Bacchus Marsh Tigers, who lost slated starter Tom Shaw to an apparent arm problem before a pitch had been thrown.

Moseying in from third base to help out, Tayler Rowe took a couple of hitters to settle into his work before spinning a quality six-innings spell that yielded just two hits for the visiting felines, who coughed up three in the first and were never really in the hunt despite drawing a few passes late in the game.

Themselves conceding just four hits – two of those to Jarrod Warwick - pitchers Scott and Pat Brackley were solid enough for Corio against an opponent that appeared undermanned on the day but took advantage of its limited scoring opportunities.

GUILD 7 defeated BALLARAT 3

GUILD 4 1 0 2 0 0 x  (7)  2 errors

Guild extended its unbeaten run with an all the way win over the Brewers, who fielded a full-strength lineup but paid for some defensive lapses that allowed the Lions to establish an unassailable seven-zip lead after four.

Although Rory Meddick and Cameron Smith both came in for some punishment from a Guild offence that racked up fifteen hits, only one of the home side’s runs was earned before the Brewers hit back later in the game when Brad Egan was relieved by Lee Harty for the save.

As always, the Egan effort was workmanlike, with Smith and Leigh Ashmore the only multiple hitters for the Brewers, while Troy Snarey (four knocks) had a day out while receiving great support from Jarrod Durston (two), Chris Durston (two), Jordan Lekkas (two) and Harry Levy – whose two hits took has tally to six in his past two games.
