Division 4 NW Premiership

Congratulations to Brett Bennell and his team on winning the Division 4 NW Premiership.

Round 15

Fitzroy 3s (7) defeated Springvale (3)

This week we travelled out to Springvale for the 2nd last game of the regular season. The South East Lions, (Springvale), had a chance to possibly go as high as 2nd by winning and few results going their way. They threw a young under 18 state pitcher, probably best we have faced all year and to his credit, kept us in check for most of the game.

We gave up 1 unearned run in the 1st and it stayed 1 nil until the bottom of the 6th when again they scored. This time it was 2 but again unearned. Going into the 7th and his pitch count rising I asked for some discipline batting to see him out and get into their relief. It worked. Even though we got hits and walks from him, we couldn't string enough together to plate a run.

Alex Roman lead off the 7th with an 8 pitch single before Joel Mackenzie followed with a 5 pitch double. This forced their hand and his pitching was done. We then attacked their relief scoring 7 runs, all earned with another 4 hits along with 2 walks to run out 7-3 winners.

It was a great pitching duel from both sides. The Northern Lions, (Fitzroy) was well served by Daniel who threw 5 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 3 k's walking 2 and as I said before 3 unearned runs. Darcy followed him onto the mound and did what Darcy does, mopped up. He threw 1 1/3 inning with 1 hit, 1 k and 1 walk.

Another highlight of the day was our infield fielding. I know Alex was given an error on a tough play but apart from that we handled everything that came our way. 2 nice double plays and some great glove work from Alex Roman. Our outfield were pretty good too, only 1 real blemish but otherwise a good game by all.

Round 14

Fitzroy 3s (16) defeated Port Melbourne (0)

This week we travelled to sunny Port Melbourne on a gloomy Sunday morning for a 1pm, (that is right Patrick, 1pm) start.

Connor took the mound and threw 4 strong innings, 66 pitches, 7 k's, 2 walks & 1 hit batter. It was a good outing from him. Daniel finished it off throwing the last giving up 1 hit whilst recording 1 k.

In the end we won 16-0. We hit the ball well with everyone getting at least 1 hit. All in total we had 16 hits. Our base running was really good with no outs made there. A special mention to Ben Wilson who when asked to lay down a sac bunt, did it with ease and with a wild throw ended up on 3rd with 2 RBI to his name.

Round 13

Fitzroy 3s (9) defeated Werribee (3)

This week we took on Werribee in our 1st home game for the year. With most of the players back we had a good line up.

Although Werribee scored 1 in the 1st on a nicely turned double play, Joel Mc & Alex M, they shut us down in the top with their pitcher showing they meant business.

Alex Roman started this week and after the 1st inning settled into a nice rhythm. He threw 4 strong innings allowing 4 hits, 2 k's, walking 4 along with 2 earned runs. Darcy Mills then took to the hill and he did what Darcy does, throws strikes and lets his fielders make the outs. He threw 2 innings, gave up 3 hits, struck out 3 and gave up 1 run.

In the 2nd inning our bats came alive and along with some luck we put 7 on the board and regain some confidence. In that inning we had 5 hits along with 2 walks. We also had 2 strikeouts. The Werribee pitcher was one of the best we had faced this year. With that said, it was a really good performance with us moving closer to the finals.

I would also like to thank Joe Filardo who filled in for us and had a solid game. He needs to cut down on his k's (lol).

A special mention to Ben Wilson. Ben played in the under 16's on Sunday morning where he pitched and batted. Then with Todd's team short by 1 player he filled in at 3rd base, making some really good plays. Then he played in this team. Unfortunately he ran out of petrol and we rested him. The good thing that he did was that he stayed in uniform and coached a base, thank you for the contributions for the whole day.

Round 12

Fitzroy 3s (12) defeated St Kilda (0)

Welcome back everyone, I hope you had a great festive season. For our 1st game back we travelled to St. Kilda in a game that could have had serious consequences on the ladder positions with only 5 games to go.

Daniel Bebbre started and threw 3 strong innings, allowing 3 hits, striking out 1 and no runs. Jordan Hill then threw 2 innings, 1 hit, 5 strikeouts and also no runs. Our 3rd pitcher for the day was Alex Roman, making his pitching debut for Fitzroy. He followed suit and allowed 1 hit, struck out 1 and allowed their only bb. It was a solid all round pitching performance.

We put together 10 hits during the game along with 2 bb let us run out 12-0 winners. The score doesn't really tell the real story as the Saints did battle the whole game. In our 10 hits we managed to record our 1st home run for the year, a monster blast from Big Doug Buckle. It was such a pure hit. Doug also ripped a double which looked close being 'out of here' also. We all hit the ball with most contributing in one way or another.

Round 11

Fitzroy 3s (15) defeated Sunshine (0)

Our last game before our Xmas break and also Jimmy Fuhrmann's last game before he heads off to the UK for work had us pitted against a youthful Sunshine where we ran out 15-0 winners.

The game day manager Jimmy Fuhrmann had Jordan on the hill for the 1st 3 innings and Jordy mowed them down. 9 outs, 9 k's, pretty impressive, allowing 1 hit & 1 bb. Daniel Bebbre then took over and threw the last 2 innings, allowing 2 hits, striking out 2 and no bb.

I would also like to pat Alec Smith on the back for his 1st 1/2 of the season. Not only does he catch here for 2 hours that is also on top of the catching he does in the morning. He has been very reliable there.

Our fielding was really good this week allowing no errors. We out hit Sunshine 11-4, received 5 bb and had 2 batters hit. It was a good performance for the outgoing manager.

As this is our last game before Xmas, remember the Club Xmas Party on Dec 20th, next Sat from 11 am. Get there if you can.

Also on a personal note, it has been mentioned a few times about Jimmy Fuhrmann's decision to go to the UK for work. I know he will be sorely missed as a player, teammate, friend and a good bloke. On behalf of the FBC Jimmy we wish you luck and if you do come back for a holiday or whatever reason, don't be a stranger. Good luck my friend.

To anyone I don't see during the next week or so, please have a Merry Xmas, a Happy New Year and a safe holiday break, come back refreshed and ready to PLAY BALL.

Cheers & Seasons Greetings!

Round 10

Fitzroy 3s (8) defeated Malvern (2)

The weather this day was not promising, but alas we played a full game against Malvern who were sitting 4th on the ladder and have proven to be good opposition.

We got off to a slow start with 2 K's in the 1st before Jordan Hill gave up 1 run in the bottom of the 1st.

We soon settled down and scored 3 in the 2nd to take a 3-1 lead and never looked back. Jordan found his rhythm and soon settled down to shut Malvern out until they scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 5th, leaving the final score 8-2 in our favour.

Our bats took a while to come good against a solid pitcher who we eventually wore down outhitting them 11-4.

Jordan threw a complete game, 5 innings, 94 pitches, 4 k's, 5 bb & only 1 earned run.

Round 9

Fitzroy 3s (17) defeated Bonbeach (1)

'Get Out Your Bats', (see pics below), was a common scene the weekend we travelled to Bonbeach for our round 9 encounter. As we all know the world lost an up and coming cricketer whose full talents will now never be on show. I would like to thank Garry Jacks and his players for the opportunity to allow everyone there to honour the life of Phillip Hughes.

The game was played in hot and dry conditions with little wind which sapped both teams but it was played in good spirits. In a game that only went 3 innings we ran out winners 17-1, which was not a true reflection of the game. With a few changes this week, Jimmy Fuhrmann got the start and threw 2 innings of 1 run ball, allowing 2 hits, 4 k's & walked 1 for the win. Carlos Garcia made his debut throwing the last giving up 1 hit, 2 walks and striking out 2. We hit the ball really well as the stats show.

Round 8

Fitzroy 3s (7) defeated Moorabbin (2)

This week we were home to Moorabbin, who currently sit 5th on the ladder only a couple of wins below us. After losing last week I was hoping for the team to bounce back, but Moorabbin had other ideas and took it to us for most of the game.

Both teams scored 1 in the 1st with Darcy telling me he was sore. A quick tap on the shoulder to Daniel Bebbre and he got things going, throwing 4 strong innings, allowing 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2 whilst allowing 1 unearned run. A great effort by Daniel. Blake Pendlebury threw the 6th to shake off some cobwebs with a 1 2 3 inning.

We outhit Moorabbin 8-4 and it wasn't until the bottom of the 5th that we scored 4 runs to put it beyond their reach with us winning 7-2. The score doesn't reflect how close the game actually was. Also our fielding was a big improvement from last week with us committing only 2 errors, the 2nd lead to an unearned run.

Round 7

Fitzroy 3s (4) defeated by Berwick (10)

This week we travelled to Berwick with a clash against another side right up there on the ladder. Having played against this team a few times we knew it wouldn’t be easy and we need to be on our game early.

We began the game in a positive manner but left 2 on base with a 3rd being caught stealing. This was the pattern for the game, with us out hitting them 8-3 and also leaving 11 on base.

It was a tight battle with Darcy throwing 4 2/3 before Ben Wilson finished it off for us. But the damage was done in the 1st where they scored 2, the 3rd where they got 2 more and in the 5th with us imploding allowing 5 unearned runs after having drawn to within 1 run on Ben Wilson's 3 run double and a RBI single from Dean Sharples.

We seem to use up all our errors against Berwick as they have scored a lot of unearned runs against us over the last few years.

Round 6

Fitzroy 3s (11) defeated Springvale (2)

Before I begin this report, I forgot to thank Ron for umpiring and Allie for scoring last week’s game against Port Melbourne, thanks again guys it is appreciated.

This week, round 6 brought Springvale to The Den, with both sides undefeated. The game went their way early with 2 in the 1st before Darcy got into his rhythm and shut them out for the rest of the game where we won 11-2. Darcy went 6 strong innings throwing 72 pitches, 48 for strikes. He gave up 5 hits, walked 2 & struck out 3 in a very dominating performance.

A special mention to Alec Smith who has been outstanding behind the plate this season with another great job in this match.

We replied with 11 hits and received 8 bb to cap off a good day. Our defence was tight with only 1 error which came in the 1st inning.

Round 5

Fitzroy 3s (14) defeated Port Melbourne (1)

This week, round 5, we were back at Merri Park facing off against Port Melbourne.

Jordan started and struck out the side, but allowed their only hit and a walk in doing so. He threw 4 complete innings, 86 pitches, 1 hit, 4 walks and 10 k's. It was a dominating performance from him.

Jimmy Fuhrmann threw the last, walking 2 & striking out 2 but allowed their only run on a passed ball.

It was a windy day but we hit the ball well, collecting 13 hits, 5 walks & 2 HPB.

Although we won 14-1, it didn't seem to be a lopsided affair even though we scored in every inning.

Round 4

Fitzroy 3s (6) defeated Werribee (2)

Round 4 took us to Werribee for a 1pm start. In a tight beginning we scored 2 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd and 1 in the 5th to eventually win 6-2.

The score doesn't reflect on how well The Bees played. They out hit us 6-3, but it was the 9 walks and 3 HPB that eventually cost them. We got hits when the free passes were handed to us. It was also good batting by us to draw 9 walks, we also stole 6 bases.

Jordan started on the mound and threw 3 strong innings, (62 pitches), with Daniel Bebbre throwing the last 2, (40 pitches), and combining for 8 k's & 3 walks between them.

As I said before we only got 3 hits, so here they are:

Round 3

Fitzroy 3s (8) defeated St Kilda (0)

This week we returned home to play an unbeaten St. Kilda. We had Darcy start with Connor playing juniors he wasn’t able to pitch.

From the 1st batter we knew it was going to be Darcy's day. He tossed 4 innings for the win throwing 64 pitches, with 48 for strikes, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks while striking out 3.

Daniel Bebbre threw 2 solid innings allowing 2 hits with the 20 pitches he threw, no walks or strikeouts.

Jordan Hill finished off the 7th with a 1-2-3 in 12 pitches. A solid all round pitching performance.

Round 2

Fitzroy 1s (4) defeated by Malvern (7)

Fitzroy Lions falls behind in sixth inning in 7-3 loss to Sunshine

Fitzroy Lions lost a hotly contested 6-3 game on Sunday at Merri Park after surrendering the lead in the sixth inning.

Blair Cowley got on base three times in the game for Fitzroy Lions. He scored one run and had one RBI. He singled in the third inning and doubled in the seventh inning.

Carl Wilson pitched lights out for Fitzroy Lions. Sunshine managed just two hits off of Wilson, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four during his two innings of work.

Danny King was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just five innings, walked three, struck out three, and allowed three runs.

Sunshine closer J Ross put away the final six outs to record the save.

The bottom of the first saw Fitzroy Lions take an early lead, 2-0. Alex Turlea kicked things off for Fitzroy Lions with a single. Wilson singled, plating Cowley and Turlea.

Sunshine got one-run boosts in each of the second, fourth and sixth. In the second, Sunshine scored on an error, scoring D Wilke.

The game was never in doubt after the sixth, as Sunshine scored one run on an RBI single by A Irons.

Sunshine piled on three more runs in the top of the seventh. M Davis doubled, scoring L Koski and S Hornstra to start the inning.

A one-run seventh inning helped bring Fitzroy Lions within three. An RBI double by Cowley sparked Fitzroy Lions' rally. Finally, A I induced an inning-ending fly out from Turlea.

Fitzroy 3s (16) defeated Sunshine (3)

Our 2nd game of the season took us to Sunshine, where it was a warm but windy day. The temp was about 28C when we started but got down to about 18C 30 minutes into the game.

Connor started for us on the mound again and gave up 3 in the 1st allowing 2 hits & 2 walks. He only allowed 1 more hit, 3 walks while striking out 8 in a strong 4 inning performance.

Round 1

Fitzroy 1s (4) defeated by Malvern (7)

Fitzroy Lions musters more hits but falls 7-4 to Malvern

Fitzroy Lions lost 7-4 at Malvern on Sunday, despite out hitting Malvern 13 to nine.

S Talbot got the win for Malvern. He allowed four runs over six innings. S Talbot struck out one, walked two and gave up 11 hits.

Malvern didn't relinquish the lead after scoring five runs in the first inning when it scored on an RBI double by S Ashton and three singles.

Malvern scored one run in the second inning, and then followed it up with one more in the sixth. In the second, Malvern scored on an error, scoring J Moore-Liester.

After pushing across two runs in the top of the third, Fitzroy Lions faced just a 6-2 deficit. A groundout by Alex Turlea and an error gave Fitzroy Lions life. S Talbot ended the inning by getting Heath Pendlebury to ground out.

Two Fitzroy Lions runs crossed the plate in the top half of the sixth, making the score 6-4. A fielder's choice and an RBI single by Gavin Juchnevicus triggered Fitzroy Lions' comeback. The Fitzroy Lions threat came to an end when S Talbot finally got Blair Cowley to fly out.

Fitzroy 3s (9) defeated Malvern (7)

Welcome to another year of Lions Baseball.  This week we were up against the reigning premiers, Malvern.  Both teams were far from the same who met in last year’s final.

Malvern jumped us with 3 in the 1st with nerves getting to Connor. We replied with 3 in the bottom of the 1st to tie it up.

Both teams were shutout in the 2nd before Connor gave up 2 in the 3rd. We then scored 3 in the 3rd.

James Little took over from Connor and stuck out the side. We then scored 1 to increase our lead to 2. A couple of errors and a timely hit saw Malvern tie it up in the top of the 5th, with James again striking out the side.

We then scored 2 to win 9-7. It was a good game to start off the season and we know that Malvern will be there at the end. Game stats are:
