Why Compete?

Competitions should be part of every level of a player’s tennis programme. In life we are always competing whether it’s trying to get admission to university, or get a job ahead of the other candidates. It’s a part of our human make up rather than avoid it we should embrace it. In tennis it provides the motivation for players to improve and a goal for players to work towards. It also provides a purpose and focus for the player and the coach, helping them work towards the relevant skills which are needed in matches.

It’s not always possible to play matches every week due to family commitments and other activities through school and possibly other sports. However, having scheduled competition that players and coaches can work towards creates a strong player development plan. At the early stages of competition the focus is on learning how to compete, as they get older it becomes learning how to win.
