Dragons make history with first ever A Grade win

History was made on Saturday afternoon when the Doncaster Baseball Club recorded its first ever Winter A Grade win, defeating Forest Hill 6-0 at Deep Creek Reserve.

The Dragons hit the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning to take the lead.

Brendan McDonald scored on a Todd Messinger RBI single to right field and Derek Medlin crossed the plate after an error cost the Eagles another run.

Doncaster added four more runs later in the seventh inning, padding the lead and ensuring the win.

Todd Messinger lead the team offensively on the day, collecting two hits, two walks and two RBIs. Callum Lethborg picked up two RBIs as well, whilst Sam Lethrborg and Ryan Synnott both knocked in a runner each.

Six runs would prove to be more than enough for Andrew Chesterton with the left-handed pitcher putting in a comanding performance for the Dragons, hurling a complete-game shutout in his second start for the year.

Chesterton struck out nine batters and only allowed five hits and one walk over seven innings in a dominant display.

Forest Hill's best chance of the game came in the second inning. The Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs but failed to capitalise on the oppourtunity after Chestrton got Adam Blackley to fly out harmlessly to right field to end the inning.

But ultimately it would be mistakes that would cost the Eagles the game.

Doncaster only had three hits on the day, but the 10 walks surrended by Eagles pitchers and the two errors commited in the field came back to haunt them. The errors allowed two runs to score and four of the batters walked would come around to cross the plate.

The win is a huge moment for the club and a winter program that has come a long way in recent years.

In 2012 the Dragons were playing D Grade baseball. Now four years later, after winning the B Grade premiership and earning promotion last year, they're winning A Grade games.

Doncaster's A-grade will continue their winter campaign with an away game at Montmorency this Saturday at 2:40pm.
