Classic pitcher's duel, but Orioles outlast Dragons

If you like high-quality pitching duels, then the Doncaster-Blackburn game at Deep Creek on Saturday was just what you wanted.  Unfortunately for the Dragons, they came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 result.

But nothing could take away the quality of the pitching match-up between Doncaster's Luke Westphal and Blackburn's Adam Bright, surely the two best left-handers in the competition, who put on spectacular displays.

Westphal, who has been outstanding in all three appearances, pitched six strong innings and allowed just one infield hit and one walk, while striking out nine. In 15 innings so far this season, he is yet to allow an earned run.  The problem for Doncaster was that Bright was equally as good and lasted longer into the game. He pitched eight shutout innings, allowing only three hits and no walks, with seven strikeouts.

Offensive highlights were hard to find. Marcel D'Avoine was the pick of the Doncaster hitters,  with two singles. And Callum Lethborg produced a double late in the game, a rare extra-base hit for a team that has been overmatched by superior opposition pitching so far this season.

The Dragons, who have scored only three runs in three games so far, will hope to put on a better offensive display when they host Cheltenham next Saturday.
