Summer Week 10 Match Report and scores

A slice of Doncaster Baseball Club history brightened up an otherwise dismal day as the Dragons lost 8-4 to Malvern at Deep Creek on Saturday.

In a game delayed by rain that continued throughout the day, the high point of the contest came in the sixth inning when Jamie Bastian became the first female player in club history to take the field in the men’s firsts.

But, like Moonlight Graham in Field of Dreams, left fielder Bastian was denied the opportunity to make a play because the ball never left the infield.

The Dragons were trailing 7-0 at the time but improved after that. Brendan McDonald put them on the board with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

After Owen de Vries and Takumi Tanaka walked, Dakota Gibson singled to drive in Doncaster’s second run. A wild pitch plated another run to make it 7-3.

The Dragons added another run in the eighth inning as McDonald collected his third hit of the day, advanced on a groundout and scored on a single by de Vries.

This was the only one of four scheduled Premier League men’s firsts games to be played on Saturday, a testament to the condition of the field and the great work done by the ground staff, aka the players, to make Deep Creek playable.

The Dragons will try to return to the winning list when they take on reigning premiers Upwey Ferntree Gully at Kings Park on Tuesday night.
