An outstanding pitching performance by import Cody Beck helped the Doncaster Dragons to victory in a lightning-fast game against Port Melbourne at Deep Creek on Sunday.

 

The Dragons won 2-0 in a game that took only 105 minutes thanks to solid pitching and error-free defence from both teams.

 

It was Doncaster’s second consecutive win after three losses, one of them against Port Melbourne two weeks earlier.

 

The revenge win was sparked by Beck, who pitched a complete-game shutout to earn his first win for his adopted team. He allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out three and not allowing a runner past first base after the first inning.

 

With base-runners in short supply, it took a leadoff single by Scott Couling in the fourth inning to get things started for Doncaster. Couling stole second and was driven in by Todd Messinger’s two-out single to open the scoring.

 

Nothing changed until the seventh inning, when Luke Utting provided the only extra-base hit of the game, a triple to centre field, and scored on Brian Chen’s single to make the score 2-0.

 

With Beck in total control, that was more than enough run support. Jack Burgoine and Callum Lethborg were the only other Dragons to have base hits.
