Who is SERAS?

The South East Regional Academy of Sport Inc. (SERAS) commenced operations in November 2001 with the objective of providing opportunities for talented young athletes from the south east region of NSW to develop their skills in their chosen sport. SERAS takes a holistic approach to the development of its athletes and provides a step in the pathway for young athletes to reach the elite level. SERAS also provides opportunities for coaches, administrators and officials within the region to develop their skills while working with one of our sport programs.

SERAS works in partnership with its strategic partner, the University of Canberra, to deliver its Education Program to all scholarship holders on an annual basis. The Education Program provides athletes with an opportunity to develop their understanding of sports psychology, sports physiology, strength and conditioning programs, media skills, public speaking, sports nutrition, time management, and sports medicine.

The academy also works with state sporting organisations to deliver the sports specific skill development component of the scholarship program which are usually in the form of weekend training camps. Some squad sport programs the academy runs are able to compete at inter-academy tournaments with the ClubsNSW Academy Games being the major event of the scholarship year (December through October).

SERAS is one of 11 Regional Academies of Sport in NSW and it covers 10 Local Government Authorities including: Bega Valley Shire Council, Bombala Council, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council; Eurobodalla Shire Council; Goulburn Mulwaree Council; Palerang Council; Queanbeyan City Council; Snowy River Shire Council; Upper Lachlan Shire Council; and Yass Valley Council.

In 2012 the academy will offer scholarships in the following squad sport programs: Golf; Lawn Bowls; Netball; and Snowsports. SERAS also offers individual scholarships in its Essential Energy Program as well as supporting developing coaches and umpires.

The Snowsports Program is run in partnership with Snowsports NSW and Snowsports ACT and offers annual scholarships to athletes aged between 13 and 18 years of age (in the scholarship year e.g. 2012) depending on their discipline. Competitive athletes from alpine, cross country, freestyle moguls, snowboarding and ski cross are eligible to nominate for a scholarship. For this program the academy also accepts nominations from athletes that reside outside the SERAS region as SERAS is the only academy in NSW offering this program.

Nominations for the 2013 SERAS Snowsports Program open on Monday 17 September 2012 and close on Friday 12 October 2012. Please refer to the SERAS website for further information and selection criteria.
