Event Information

The Big Canberra Bike Ride incorporating Amy’s Ride is all about fun, personal challenge and safety.

Please read and embrace the following rules and guidelines;

Safety tips and requirements

* All registered riders are insured (personal injury and 3rd party insurance) for the ride - unregistered riders are not insured
* Register for the ride (online, on the day before, or on the day)
* Wear your rider bib number - but first write your emergency contact details on the inside of your rider number
* Attend the rider briefing at the start/finish area before you start your ride
* Be courteous to ALL other road users - they have as much right to use the road as you
* Wear an undamaged Australian Standard approved helmet at all times while riding
* Carry your own tools, pump, puncture repair kit, first aid kit, and whatever else you desire
* Obey ALL road rules at all times.

Important riding guidelines include

* Keep left (except when turning right)
* Ride no more than two abreast (except when overtaking, when you may ride three abreast)
* Overtake on the right only and when passing another rider to call out 'passing'
* Choose to ride single file when on narrow roads, where there is no shoulder, or in heavy traffic
* Stop at ALL stop signs and red traffic lights - that's the law
* Make your intentions clear to other riders, pedestrians and motorists
    - use verbal calls including: 'car back', 'passing', 'on your right', 'slowing' or 'stopping' as appropriate
    - Point out potholes, rocks and other road hazards to other riders behind
* Ride carefully, and maintain a safe distance between you and your fellow riders
* Ride according to the conditions and take heed of warning signs and advice from event marshals
* Ride within your capabilities; Pace yourself throughout the ride
* In wet conditions, increase your distance behind and beside other riders to allow safe braking
* If you experience a mechanical, an incident, or if the ride takes its toll on you, immediately call for support. Event medical and support contact details are provided on the back of your rider bib number
* Bring food and refreshments with you on your ride, even though refreshments are available at Stromlo Forest Park. Regular intake fluid and food as it is important to your wellbeing

The ride

* It is not a race or a time trial, but a fun ride with a personal challenge
* There is a bike mechanic at the event hub and out on the 68 km and 105 km courses
* You are riding on public roads with motor vehicles
* Maps of the course are available on the website and at the start
* The course is sign-posted at all junctions and turns
* Marshals are located at key junctions and other turn points
* The finish is at the start location at the Event hub (Federation Mall, behind Old Parliament House)

The ride

* The Big Canberra Bike Ride incorporating Amy’s Ride is not a race or a time trial, but a fun ride with a personal challenge
* There is a bike mechanic at the event hub and another roving out on the 68 km and 105 km courses
* You are riding on public roads with motor vehicles
* Maps of the course are available on the website and at the start
* The course is sign-posted at all junctions and turns
* Marshals are located at key junctions and other turn points
* The finish is at the start location at the Event hub (Federation Mall)

Route Caution

* Please note that you will be asked to take care as you return to Canberra along Cotter Road. Riders on all routes and distances will share approximately 2km of Cotter Road that runs from the corner of Uiarra Road (as you pass Stromlo) to the junction with Streeton Drive (the second set of lights). At this junction 28km riders will turn onto the off-road path to return to the start finish whilst other riders will continue on-road. The cycle lane is wide, but we ask slower riders to stay to the left and suggest all riders ride in single file and take care overtaking.

Food and water

* Bring water and food for during the ride
* Water and TORQ electrolyte pre-mix is available at the start/finish and at the main refreshment/aid station at Stromlo Forest Park
* Food and drink is available for purchase at the start and finish
* Free fresh fruit is available at the finish of your ride

Facilities and assistance

* Toilets are available around the 28km course at:
    - the event hub
    - in Lenox Gardens (behind the Hyatt Hotel)
    - at Stromlo Forest Park (main refreshment/aid station)  - ½ way point  

* Toilets are available around the 68 km and 105 km courses at:
     - the event hub
     - in Kings Park near the Carillon
     - at Stromlo Forest Park (main refreshment/aid station)   

* Sag wagons (indicate if you require assistance) will ensure no one is left stranded

In case of emergency

* Check for the rider's emergency contact details on the inside of their rider number
* For on-route First Aid assistance,please call the number on your rider bib -0487 433 962
* For on-route mechancial assistance, please call the number on your rider bib – 0487 433 963
* In emergency, phone 000 for an ambulance
* There is mobile phone reception throughout most parts of the course
* First-aid officer with transport is at the start and will patrol the course

The Event organisers reserve the right to disqualify riders (by voiding their participation) if they are found to be disobeying road rules or riding unsafely.
