2014 - Round 10 Review, Results and Ladders
Round 10
Saturday 28 June 2014
At Anzac Park, Warracknabeal
REVIEW
Freezing and slow for round 10
Wet, windy and freezing conditions for Wimmera Hockey Association matches on Saturday at Warracknabeal together with longish grass on Anzac Park made scoring difficult. Scores were mostly low with the only major exception in the round 10 matches being one of the junior games. The style of game was very different to when playing on turf with hard hits being more effective than short passes to open up the field and avoid congestion.
Only a small splash of pink to help mark Hockey Victoria’s Women’s Round could be seen around the grounds as most people were hiding from the bitter weather. Women’s Round is to help celebrate the contributions women and girls make to the sport both on and off the field.
Juniors
Kaniva Raiders played with 10 players while the Dimboola Kangaroos fielded 11 with the help of two borrowed players. Raiders still had the advantage with Kylan Hendy scoring five goals to help boost the tally to take a strong win 16-1. Kangaroos’ Hayden Withers at half back and borrowed player Kaitlyn Miller played strong games together with Teo Haines who also scored the Kangaroos’ goal in the second half. Duncan Shalders was named best for Raiders, also scoring a goal. Hendy’s goals put him equal top junior goal scorer so far at 14 together with teammate Lachie Mills who also scored one on Saturday.
Warrack Revengers and Nhill Leopards were playing an even game until Revengers got the upper hand with a score late in the first half. Good defence from both teams stopped a number of fast attacking plays. Colin Taylor with two goals was named best for Revengers in the 2-0 win. Full back Victoria Janetzki was named best for Leopards.
Horsham Bombers and Dimboola Kookaburras played a good even contest. Bombers earned several attacking short corners while Kookaburras earned a few as well. With 9 minutes to go William Gulline scored and Bombers held on to claim their third win for the season, 1-0. Gulline was named best for Bombers while Danny Moore was best for Kookaburras.
Yanac Warriors with their second bye pick up two points which allows the Raiders to jump above them on the ladder into top position with the advantage for the time being.
Women
Two first-time goal scorers gave Warrack Women their second win of the season, with both wins being against Kaniva Women. Mary-ann Paris scored in the first half to give Warrack the upper hand. Kaniva fought back but were unable to convert despite being almost on the line. Claire McDonald was a strong centre half back for Kaniva defending well and using strong hits to put her team into attack. Strong defence and strong hits from Alana Argent kept the pressure on for Warrack throughout the match and earned herself best on ground rights. Erin Slater scored her first career goal in the second half and she was also amongst the best in the 2-0 win.
Dimboola Women were three goals up at half time against Nhill Thunderbirds despite ground conditions being slow and difficult to negotiate. Dimboola has plenty of hard hitters which suited the day with short passing not as effective. Thunderbirds were able to get one back in the second half to finish 3-1 in Dimboola’s favour. Left half back Brooke Nuske was named best for Dimboola while centre half back Emma Janetzki was best for Thunderbirds.
Yanac Women played a strong team game against Horsham Highlanders who were without several notable players. Yanac, without their usual goalie, scored twice in each half through four different scorers to win 4-0. Inner Louise Bone led the charge earning best on ground rights for the unbeaten Yanac, also with a goal. Karen Triffitt put in a top performance at full back for Highlanders to be named best for her side. Bone’s goal puts her at equal top women’s scorer so far with 9, equal with Lauren Bendall of Thunderbirds.
Open
The unbeaten Yanac Tigers had a solid win 3-0 over Horsham Hurricanes, scoring through three different players. Playing with a couple of borrowed players and female goalie Hannah Fredericks who put in a solid effort deflecting Tiger attacks, Hurricanes were able to attack and almost had a goal of their own although disallowed. Darren Schwarz at half back was named best for Hurricanes. Bradley Alexander at inner was named best for Tigers.
Cobras suffered their second loss of the season losing 2-1 to Warrack Hoops. Cobras scored in the first half through Brett Jewell and were leading at half time. But Hoops know how to regroup and matched the score late in the second half then a minute later scored again to claim the win. Jarrod Knoop with a goal was named best for Hoops while Braden Clark a consistent right half back was named best for Cobras.
Dimboola Men and Nhill Rangers played a very even first half with both teams having an equal number of opportunities. There were lots of tussles in the mid-field and both defences played extremely well with the end result a fitting 0-0 draw. Mont Miller was a dependale full back for Rangers while Brett Tischler put in a sterling performance through the mid-field for Dimboola.
Marcus Williamson is still in front on the open goal scoring board with 11.
