The Rotorua Marathon was once again a fantastic festival of running and walking with over 5000 taking part in all the distances at the iconic event. Two new champions were crowned. Alice Mason has won the half marathon at Rotorua previously and this year stepped up to win the full marathon, moving into 14th place on the women’s fastest times list. Read on to find out more about the men’s winner.

In this issue of Athletics in Action we talk to Maddison Wesche about her path to this year’s World U20 Championships in Finland and we catch up with javelin thrower Ben Langton Burnell for our “Five minutes with …” segment. We also chat with Blair McWhirter following his maiden NZ championship win at Rotorua Marathon.

The winter season is in full swing just now with lots of big cross country events coming up soon including the NZ Secondary Schools Champs in Taupo, North and South Island Champs and NZ Champs in Wellington, so get amongst it!

Rotorua Marathon


The 54th Rotorua Marathon was a huge hit with increased numbers across all distances, perfect running conditions and a new scenic half marathon course. This year it also doubled as the 2018 New Zealand Marathon Championships which meant national titles were fought for from elite through to masters age grades.

Club Connect 2018


Athletics NZ’s annual club conference – Club Connect will be held in Wellington this year, on Saturday 4 August. This is the day before the New Zealand Cross Country, so there will be lots of club people in town that weekend. The Club Connect programme is designed specifically to assist and support clubs to improve what they do and provide great services to their members. We’d like to see every club represented by at least 1 person at Club Connect this year. Check out the 2018 Club Connect page for more information and to register.

 

2018 AGM

The Annual General Meeting of Athletics NZ will take place on Saturday 4 August in Wellington following on from Club Connect and the day before the NZ Cross Country Championships. Clubs should arrange to have a representative at the AGM. Registration can be completed in the

International Notes

After two rounds if the IAAF Diamond League (Doha and Shanghai), we’ve had just one Kiwi athlete in action. Dame Valerie Adams competed in Shanghai last weekend picking up 8th place. Coming up soon, we'll see World Shot Put Champion Tom Walsh headlining a stellar men’s shot put field at the Prefontaine Classic next weekend in Eugene. Eliza McCartney will also be competing in upcoming Diamond League meets and Nick Willis could be in action later in the season.

The World Racewalking Team Championships in Taicang, China saw two Kiwis in action with Alana Barber performing outstandingly to improve her NZ 20km record, while Quentin Rew got a top 10 finish in the men’s 50km race.

Vanuatu was the venue for the Melanesian Championships with a number of Kiwis striving for places in the Oceania team for the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. Dominic Overend took out a very good sprint double, Connor Bell won the discus and Kayla Goodwin extended the NZ U18 & U19 triple jump records with a big PB to win the event. Cody House (long jump), Murdoch McIntyre (steeplechase), Charli Miller (800m  and steeplechase) and Hannah O’Connor (3000m) picked up top three placings.

And finally, Sam McCutcheon and Mel Aitken were in action at the World 85km Trail Championships in Spain.

New Regulations proposed

Athletics NZ revised its Constitution some years ago and have just have undertaken a secondary project to revise and update the Regulations to better align with the Constitution as well as responding to changing legal and sport requirements.  As a consequence we have now completely revised the Regulations for the consideration of our Membership.
The process for changing Regulations includes a period of 50 days consultation on any proposed changes.  We therefore invite Members to consider the set of
Consultation Draft Regulations  
We welcome feedback and comment on these draft Regulations by no later than 5pm on Wednesday 4 July, 2018.  We will consider the feedback and the Athletics NZ Board will formally agree the final Regulations which will take effect.

 

Chair Stepping Down

Athletics NZ Chair Annette Purvis will be stepping down from the Athletics NZ Board at the August AGM after an outstanding stint at the helm of the organisation. Annette has been a member of the Board since 2004 and its Chair since 2006.
