The school holidays are over and most summer clubs are now in full swing! It’s still a bit cool, but before long it will definitely feel like summer – we hope. If you haven’t done so yet, join up to your local club. Most clubs are using Online Registration which make it easy to join up from home. If you haven’t decided on a club yet, check out our Club Finder.

Our recent NZ 24 hour National Championships saw some incredible feats of endurance, with women’s winner Dawn Tuffery covering an amazing 202 km (506 laps) on the AUT Millennium track in 24 hours. There’s still another two New Zealand Championship events before the end of 2017, the Long Distance Walks this weekend and the Half Marathon Champs in Kerikeri on 18 November.

In this issue of Athletics in Action we chat with Black Ferns star Carla Hohepa and find out why she loves athletics, we profile the largest club in New Zealand, Pakuranga Athletic Club on their 50th anniversary and we catch up with Olympic pole vault medallist Eliza McCartney for our “Five minutes with …” segment.

There's much more in this issue of Athletics in Action, so keep reading.

Olympic Solidarity scholarships awarded

Ryan Ballantyne (shot put) and Olivia McTaggart (pole vault) have received prestigious Olympic Solidarity Tokyo 2020 scholarships. Only ten of the scholarships, designed to assist athletes preparing and attempting to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, were available and Athletics New Zealand is thrilled that two have been awarded to the sport of athletics. The scholarships provide monthly training grants to cover training and preparation costs. Congratulations Ryan and Olivia!

High Performance Topics

A recent Development Camp was held in Auckland for Athletics NZ Performance Potential Squad (PPS) members and other selected athletes. Nineteen athletes and 15 coaches along with Athletics NZ and HPSNZ support staff were at the successful camp. The main  topic was ‘transitioning into High Performance’, with presentations and discussions centring around the ‘four fundamental elements’ to maximise athletes chances of reaching their own potential. There was a focus on performance behaviours, resilience and training environment needs and challenges. It's great to be supporting emerging talent in the sport!

We’re rolling out selection policies for 2018 international events over the next two months. The first is the Oceania Half Marathon Champs - keep an eye out for more on the 2018 Competitions page

You can check out all the latest updates from our High performance team HERE.
