The start of the summer athletics season is here! Clubs are holding registration days and clubnight activity has started for many clubs. If you or your family is going to be involved in Athletics this summer, we know you’ll have a great time! If you haven't done it yet, get on down to your local athletics club and sign up!

The NZ Road Relay Championships last weekend signalled the official end of the 2017 winter season. A fantastic weekend to celebrate running with hundreds of club athletes in Rotorua for the champs.

There’s still another three New Zealand Championship events before the end of 2017.

In this issue of Athletics in Action we catch up with Hamish Grey, the newly appointed Athletics NZ Chief Executive to see what his priorities are for the future, we chat with 1968 Olympic Bronze medallist Mike Ryan following a surprise invitation to Turkey and we catch up with discus thrower Marshall Hall for our “Five minutes with” segment.

Run Jump Throw Revamp

The new and improved Run Jump Throw programme is being rolled out around New Zealand with recent training sessions in Auckland, Whangarei, Dunedin and Hamilton. Gold Coast 2018

It’s just six months to the start of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The NZOC campaign has kicked off with the theme #EarnTheFern.  Check out the video featuring lots of former Athletics medallists.

2017 NZ Road Relays


Athletics NZ’s biggest championship event took place at the weekend in Rotorua. The 2017 NZ Road Relay Championships saw 750 runners and many club officials with 110 teams from 28 clubs racing in the championships. It was a fantastic celebration of club running with some excellent racing and lots of fun. It was a big result for Hamilton City Hawks, being crowned the top overall club.

NZ Sec Schools Champs


It’s only eight weeks to the biggest NZ track and field meeting of the year. The NZ Secondary Schools Champs in Hastings 1-3 December will be a fantastic meeting. Entries open next week, so if you want to compete, make sure your school enters you. If you want to go to the championships, plan your trip now.

If you haven’t seen our 2017-2018 summer programme, it’s available HERE. This summer season will be an exciting one with lots of action and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on our doorstep at the end of the season. With a few events still to be confirmed, check out the Major Events on the New Zealand Calendar.

 

Next Athletics NZ Championship events

There are still three more New Zealand Championship events to be held in 2017 and entries are still open for the NZ Long Distance Walks in Timaru on 22 October and the NZ Half Marathon Championships in Kerikeri on 18 November.

A rising Para athlete star and an Olympic medallist were among the University of Auckland students honoured with Blues Awards at a gala event last Friday.
