First up, let's congratulate Tom Walsh - World Shot Put Champion!

Walsh became the first New Zealand male to win a medal at the IAAF Athletics Championships after a stunning effort in London. What a fantastic achievement!

This last two weeks have been action-packed. with all sorts of athletics on offer.

We’ve had the Athletics NZ Club Connect Conference, the Athletics New Zealand AGM, the New Zealand Cross Country Championships, the World Mountain Running Championships, World Para Athletics Junior Championships and the start of the IAAF World Championships in London.

In this issue of Athletics in Action we talk to high Jumper Hamish Kerr who is heading off to the World University Games in Taiwan, we chat with Holly Robinson after her silver medal at the World Para Athletics Championships in London and we catch up with Hammer Thrower Lauren Bruce for our “Five minutes with …” segment.

Holly's silver lining

Javelinist Holly Robinson followed up her 2016 Paralympic silver with the same colour medal at the recent 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London. Here the Kiwi, who hails from the West Coast, reflects on another successful season and her desire to upgrade to gold at next year’s Commonwealth Games.

NZ Cross Country Championships


The New Zealand Cross Country Championships  in Auckland Domain was a fantastic day on a great course with outstanding weather. We crowned six new cross country title-holders in the senior, under 20 and under 18 races.

Pacific School Games

The two teams selected by the New Zealand Children’s Athletics Assn (NZCAA) for the Pacific School Games in Australia have been announced. Congratulations to the 30 athletes and eight managers who will be travelling to Australia for the Games in December.

International Appointment for Liam Malone

New Zealand Paralympic double gold medallist Liam Malone is one of seven members on the new Athletes Advisory Group (AAG) just named by World Para Athletics. A fantastic and well deserved appointment.

Entries are open now for the Athletics NZ Road Championships in Christchurch on 2 September.
The next championship to open will be the NZ Road Relay Championships in Rotorua on 30 September.

IAAF World Championships


What an amazing performance from Tom Walsh in London, winning Gold at the men’s shot put at the IAAF World Championships!  We’ve also had Jacko Gill and Eliza McCartney finishing ninth and Zane Robertson sixteenth in their events at the championships . It’s not over yet – we have four Kiwis in action on Thursday evening (Friday morning NZ time) striving to make finals.

Athletics NZ AGM


At the 130th AGM of Athletics New Zealand  in Auckland on 30 July, former Olympian Dianne Rodger (pictured left) was elected the President of Athletics New Zealand. Athletics New Zealand Board chairman Annette Purvis (pictured right) was honoured with Life Membership of the association, while Merit Awards were presented to John Tylden, Heather O’Hagan and David Lonsdale. Chris Maister was reappointed to the Board and Peter Wyatt was elected to the Board. Chief Executive Linda Hammersley (pictured centre) was farewelled.
