We’ve had a lot of new people register with athletic clubs since our last Athletics in Action went out two weeks ago, so this may be the first time you have received a copy. If this is your first issue, welcome to the sport and we hope you have a fun time in athletics over summer.

Athletics in Action is a fortnightly e-newsletter sent out on Thursdays full of great articles, profiles, interviews with the stars, latest updates and upcoming events in the world of athletics. If you'd no longer like to receive this newsletter you can unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of this email on the far left.

In this issue of Athletics in Action, we talk to the recent winner of the women’s race at Auckland Marathon about her transition from a water-based sport to a land-based one and her rapid rise through the ranks. We hear from a rising star in pole vault and how Eliza McCartney is proving inspirational for her. There’s a story about a unique event held in Hawera each summer and we spend five minutes with one of our Olympians who is also a World University champion. We also look where your Athletics New Zealand fees end up.

There’s more in this issue of Athletics in Action, so keep reading.

A helping hand for your club

Every athletic club needs a band of volunteers to help the club run smoothly. The best clubs all have a solid group of people in various roles to help create a good experience for members and the biggest pool of helpers usually comes from parents. Your club would love it if you offered to take on a role (however small) to make things go well. Get in touch with one of the committee members next time you are at the club, or if the club asks for help, please put your hand up. Check out the sections on officiating and coaching further on to see how you could be involved in these areas.

Officiating in Athletics

The sport of athletics relies on officials to run athletics meetings. Officials are a very important part of our sport and Athletics NZ supports these valuable people in any way we can. One of the ways we can support officials is to help them develop their skills and give them opportunities to improve. Find out more about becoming an Athletics Official, or get in touch with your Regional Officials Coordinator

Jumping to the Music

The music from the enormous rock concert size speakers boom loudly, the heavy bass lines are felt before they are heard. Masters Action

A big group of 115 masters athletes represented New Zealand at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth recently. They performed outstandingly and returned with 18 gold medals, 23 silvers and 35 bronze, along with a swathe of NZ records. Check out the NZ medallists and the full results.
This weekend it’s off to Timaru for the South Island Masters Champs and the following weekend, Palmerston North for the North Island Masters Champs. Hope the rocking and rolling doesn’t affect  either event - not sure what the rules say about quake-aided performances but we'd rather there are no issues!

Rankings & Records

Our Rankings & Records  section is one of the most popular areas of our website. With 70,000 performances by more than 3,500 athletes, this is a fantastic source of information. A reminder that to be listed on the database, performances must reach the set standards and also meet criteria regarding the type of competition and the rules under which the competitions are held. Check it out if you haven’t been there before.
