What a big couple of weeks ahead for athletics fans! 
NZ Cross Country champs in Auckland next weekend, doubling as the Oceania Cross Country Champs, the Athletics NZ Club Connect club conference and the Athletics NZ AGM.
Then the big one. It only rolls round every four years and it's just 15 days to the start of the athletics at the 2016 Rio Olympics. We’re getting really excited about the Games with a team of 14 athletes heading to Rio soon – our biggest since Atlanta in 1996. 
In this issue we talk to one of our Rio team members who has finally succeeded in making it to the Olympics and we look at an exciting initiative that is planned to take advantage of our fantastic middle distance successes.

Carson's Olympic Odyssey 

Earlier this month Hamish Carson earned confirmation he was one of three men set to don the Black Singlet in the 1500m at the Rio Olympics. As Steve Landells discovered the 27-year-old’s journey to the sport’s pinnacle event has been a richly deserved prize after years of near misses.

New 24 hour Championship event

There was recently a proposal to introduce an Athletics New Zealand 24-Hour Championship for Men and Women. The proposal went out to the sport for the required 50 days consultation and following submissions, the Rules Committee recommended that the event be added as an Athletics New Zealand Championship event. This was confirmed at the Athletics NZ June Board meeting. The updated Regulations – Competition now include this event.

Big weekend in Auckland

The Club Connect Conference, Athletics NZ AGM and the 2016 NZ Cross Country Champs all take place next weekend in Auckland. If you haven’t registered for the Conference and/or AGM, it’s not too late!
Our very useful Club Connect Annual Club Conference kicks things of on the Saturday. The Athletics NZ AGM will be on Sunday morning and we cap off the weekend with the
NZ and Oceania Cross Country Champs in Auckland Domain.

Three big domestic championship events with a lot of interest are coming up soon!
Next Sunday are the 
NZ & Oceania Cross Country Championships, doubling as the Oceania Cross Country Champs. Following that we move to Masterton for the NZ Road Championships on 3 September and then on to Rotorua for the Road Relay Champs on 1 October..

Middle Distance Training Hub launched

Hot on the heels of New Zealand’s unprecedented achievement of qualifying three men for an Olympic 1500m an exciting initiative is to be launched which it is hoped will aid the development of the next generation of Kiwi middle-distance athletes.

Athletics NZ is running a Facebook competition to find the best support videos and pictures in the country.  So get your club together and get creative to show your club is the biggest supporter of our Athletics team. International Action

There’s been more overseas action since the last issue of Athletics in Action.
The World U20 Track & Field Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland resulted in some very good performances by the Kiwi team. Head to  NZL at the World U20 Champs
We've also seen more Diamond League success for Valerie Adams, Tom Walsh and Eliza McCartney in Europe.
The excitement of Rio 2016 is only 15 days away for athletics fans, so start getting ready to take on the action and follow our team.
The Olympics will be followed quickly by the amazing Rio Paralympics with eight of our athletes in action.
We also have the World Mountain Running Champs in September and look out also for the remaining four IAAF Diamond League meets in September which will feature Kiwis.
That’s enough to keep athletics fans excited! Now just enjoy it!

Athletics New Zealand’s Throwsfest 2016 is a merger of the very successful Hammerfest and Shot Put Discus Camp events from last season, bringing it all together in one massive get-together for throwers (beginners to experts) and coaches. It’s straight after the New Zealand Secondary schools champs in Auckland. Love throwing? Then get to Throwsfest!

Combined Events development tour with Les Gramantik

One of the world’s leading combined events coaches, Les Gramantik will be in New Zealand at the beginning of the summer season and is holding a series of workshops in Auckland and Christchurch.
