Host Club Profiles - Southport

No stranger to running big events, having been a great supporter of the 2015 Australian Open and a host club during the 2015 Pan Pacific Masters Games, Southport again promises to be a fine venue for the 2016 event.

Situated just off the Gold Coast Highway and a stonesthrow away from the bay, this picturesque club is the home of current Queensland State Over 60's Pairs champions Cliff Hawken and Alan Elliott (also the club's greenkeeper).

The club also runs one of the most successful Jack Attack programs throughout the coutnry, and we will have a feature story on how the club has leveraged this program to great success later in the event!

Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation

Bowls Australia is proud to be aligned to Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation. The foundation aims to make organ and tissue donation awareness more prevalent in our community. By informing parents of the importance of discussing these issues with their children should they ever be placed in the same situation as founders Kim and Allan Turner were, with the tragic and sudden death of their daughter Zaidee in 2004.

The foundation hopes to greatly improve the donation rate year upon year, giving those that are currently on transplant waiting lists a better chance at getting their transplant by encouraging people to register as Organ and Tissue Donors.

Zaidee's trademark symbol, the rainbow shoelace, was worn by Aaron Teys during his victory in the Men's Singles final at the 2015 Australian Open, and will be available for purchase at the Bowlers Paradise trade stand at Broadbeach Bowls Club throughout the event for $2.00.

We would encourage all bowlers to get behind this fantastic cause and grab a set of laces from the trade stands.

Last year’s most consistent performer, Cabramatta’s Nathan Pederson will be hoping to replicate his 2015 performance and pocket the extra $1500 prize money for this year’s Player of the Event.

Cricket legend Kepler Wessels was talk of the town during the Blue Diamond Pairs at Broadbeach Bowls Club and will make his maiden Australian Open appearance tomorrow at Robina.

To catch all the men’s singles action these are the clubs you need to be at; Broadbeach, Helensvale, Musgrave Hill, Robina, Southport, Paradise Point, Mudgeeraba, Mermaid Beach and Tugun.
