Entries are already flooding in for the 53rd Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon 2017! It seems like only yesterday we were welcoming thousands over the finish line in Rotorua for the 52nd running of the event.Every year there are so many wonderful stories  of challenges overcome, departed loved ones remembered, money raised for a worthy cause and people just getting out and reaching a personal milestone in the (usually) sunny Rotorua weather!

It always astounds us how many people come back year after year. The mighty Rotorua Marathon Survivors Club, for those that have completed at least 15 full marathons now stands at an incredible 531 members. Each member of the hallowed club receives an embroidered Survivors Club polo and on each subsequent five year milestone a new shirt is presented to honour a fantastic achievement.

A new initiative in 2016 has been to create a family of official charities for runners and walkers and their supporters to get behind and raise vital funds for. We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Child Cancer Foundation, SPCA, Achilles New Zealand and Mental Health Foundation.

There are some inspirational stories too: Erin Hampson-Tindale is running the full marathon with a 40kg dirt bike on his back to raise money for 2 year old Reef Smith, who has cancer;  Tamati Coffey is supporting the Mental Health Foundation making his half marathon count; our blog writer, columnist, marathoner and yoga teacher Rachel Grunwell is running for Achilles NZ and supporting blind runner Tamati Pearce on his marathon challenge.

So far 52 people are running or walking to raise money for our official charities! Thanks everyone!

Why not check out their fundraising pages at and add some cash to the cause.

The One-year-old Ella was in a lot of pain when she was rescued by an SPCA Inspector last year. Her front leg was badly broken and she had not received the vet care she desperately needed – the difficult decision was made to amputate her leg.
Armed with a custom-made orthopaedic brace, Ella is now able to live the pain-free life she deserves; racing around her lifestyle block with her new family.
Ella won’t let three legs slow her down. Join Team SPCA for the 2016 Rotorua Marathon and you will be running to help save animals like Ella.

Rachel Grunwell is a mum, marathoner, yoga teacher & award-winning writer. She’s the director of Inspired Health… and resident blogger for the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon.
