March 2016 edition

President's Message

The 2016 year is well and truly off and away as the OWS season draws to a close for the southern states. Congratulations to the members who featured on podiums around Australia in their age groups.

A record number of members have entered the 2016 National Championships to be held in Melbourne at MSAC on April 21 - 24. The Organising Committee were over the moon with this response to their promotions but with this success comes the need for careful planning to comfortably accommodate 727 swimmers. It is going to be a great event. We look forward to welcoming you to the carnival of swimming on the ANZAC weekend and hope you make the most of your visit to Melbourne.

Craig Smith
MSA President

With our training and competitions getting into full swing for the year, it’s important to make sure that all of our coaches, officials and spectators are properly protected from the sun. MSA takes sun protection seriously, and we would like our members to enjoy swimming events and training sessions while being sun safe.

Coaching Corner

What are Masters Swimmers looking for in a Coach?

By Peter Reaburn PhD

Research has consistently shown that coaches matter! Coaches set the program, the tone of the workout, the level of motivation, and the level of improvement we make. But as in all professions there are coaches and there are coaches. The good and the bad. Those that make a difference and those that don’t.

CLICK HERE to read some US research that was undertaken to examine the experiences of competitive masters swimmers by asking them to describe desired coaching characteristics and the benefits they perceived by being involved with masters swimming.

Technical Corner

Do you know the rules? Simplified help sheets for Officials and Swimmers are now available.

Contemplating pool competition in 2016? If so, you need to be aware of the rules and technicalities of swimming. The rules may have changed since you last competed !

Club Coaches should already be incorporating these hints into their training sessions.

MSQ has just advised that  Christian Thiess passed away this week. He died in what the police term 'A freak accident' while riding his bicycle.

Christian was a former member of Hervey Bay, before joining the Barbarian club. Many of our members know Christian well as one of our successful competitors, who over the years broke many National and State records.

A few years ago, he took up training and competing in triathlons although he continued competing in pool events.  He was aiming to compete in a major event as an 80 year old in 2017.

We pass on our condolences on behalf of the Masters Swimming community to his family and friends.
