Achilles is an international charitable organisation with the goal of providing everyday people with disabilities the opportunity to participate alongside able-bodied athletes in main stream running events. People of all abilities wanting to run distances from 5kms to marathons are included, it’s certainly not the domain of elites and athletes have included blind runners, those suffering from cerebral palsy and people who have had strokes and accidents. For an event such as the Lion Foundation Rotorua Marathon, one or two guides are teamed up to run with an athlete and provide support and encouragement throughout the race.

If you know of someone who would like to participate in Achilles, please check out the website Chapters currently operate in Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington and Christchurch. Hamilton and Whangarei should be up and running during 2016.Training occurs on a fortnightly basis.
