August 2015 Edition

Welcome to the August e-news.
The Fina Masters World Championships in Kazan,  Russia have come to an end and yet again our swimmers achieved some tremendous successes.  The fact that they competed, regardless of the results, is a great credit to them and we trust they all enjoyed the experience.
The application to host the Pan Pacific Masters Games has been made and the final date of the event to be hosted by MSQ in 2016,  will be known shortly.
The 2016 MSQ State Championships to be held in Miami on the Gold Coast, hosted by the Miami club, is well into preparations for the event.  Exciting is the inclusion of the 1500m Freestyle event as the first one on Friday, 11 March.  As a result of this event, the championships will be held during three full days instead of the shortened day one.

As always we welcome articles, profiles on achievements, club and events.

Thelma Bryan: Positive Ageing Award

The 2015 Positive Ageing Awards have been held over morning tea at Rydges Cairns Esplanade, coinciding with Seniors Week. (L-R) Thelma Bryan was awarded for her dedicated service to seniors and John Ehm won the Community Volunteer Service award at the morning tea.

WITH her five hip replacements, 85-year-old yoga teacher Thelma Bryan is the perfect  advocate for positive ageing as part of this year’s Seniors Week.
Mrs Bryan, who is also a champion swimmer, was one of the stars of the show at a “thank you volunteers” morning tea organised by Positive Ageing Cairns Inc (PACI) yesterday to celebrate the start of Seniors Week.
The selfless octogenarian volunteers her time teaching yoga in the Steady Steps Falls Prevention Program.

“As you age, you get great satisfaction out of knowing you can still offer something for others,” Mrs Bryan said ahead of receiving the PACI Pager Award for dedicated service to seniors.
Thelma is one of MSQ's respected and successful swimmers and a member of the Cairns Muddies.  Well done, Thelma!

Fundraising Idea:  Holding a High Tea

Sports Community provides some very useful ideas to clubs, including some successful fundraising ideas.
"A 'High Tea' is a great fundraising idea with class.  It involves a genteel afternoon of fine dining with delicious treats, engaging conversation, all over a pot of tea and maybe a glass of bubbly or two.  The venue and catering play a big part in the financial returns of your High Tea fundraiser and it is a good idea to ensure the event remains popular for years by sourcing quality food, drinks and a venue that reflects a true 'High Tea".

For more information, click on How to host a 'High Tea' fundraiser.

2016 National Championships - Victoria

The 2016 National Championships will be hosted by MS Victoria in Melbourne. We encourage our members to attend this major MSA event, which will also be part of the Swim Series 2016.

MS Victorian members and clubs support us consistently at the PPMG events and a large number of swimmers attended the Nationals in Rockhampton in 2014.

Diabetes Queensland
MSQ will be supporting Diabetes Queensland on the 14 November in a
10km swim-a-thon.  All our clubs will be encouraged to support the organisation, which provides vital services to thousands of people with diabetes.  The 14 November is the official Diabetes Day and although clubs will be encouraged to swim in the 10km event on that Saturday, it is not essential.
Clubs may nominate any day to complete the 10km as individuals or as teams.
Each swimmer will register and then aim to find as many sponsors as you can to support your contribution to the 10km swim.
More information on how to register etc.  will soon be sent to clubs.
Clubs are encouraged to invite triathletes, open water swimmers and friends to be part of this 10km swim-a-thon.
2015 - 2016 Registration Fees

The 2015-2016 Registration fees have been posted on the MSQ web site and they've
been sent to clubs.  The fees can be found in the Information/Fees' page of the MSQ web site.  MSQ has not increased its fees.
4 and 16 month registrations open on 1 September 2015 and the 12 month registrations on the 1 December 2015.
