Masters Swimming WA

Autumn e-News  2015

  From the President

Welcome to the autumn edition of MSWA’s E-news. I hope all members are in peak fitness after a summer of outstanding HBF open water events and that you are focused on our upcoming HBF State Open Water swim at Coogee Beach on Saturday 21st March followed by the 2015 LiveLighter All Club Challenge at HBF Stadium on 28th/29th March. We are hopeful that Clubs have spread the word to members that the All Club Challenge is for members of all abilities and can be a good opportunity to gauge how the training has been going and to enjoy swimming relays with Club mates.  Good luck to all.

We had a good turnout of members including Life Members and club delegates at the Council of Clubs meeting and AGM on 17th February.  Apart from the normal administration items at these meetings it also gave us the chance to recognise some outstanding contributions by some of our members and recognise clubs that have been performing very well.

At the Council of Clubs meeting several awards were presented.  Bay View achieved the highest increase in members in the 2014 LiveLighter Swim into Spring membership growth project with Geraldton and Whitford as runners up. Thornlie, Fremantle and Superfins also received awards for overall points and improvement factors in the 2014 LiveLighter Club Challenge Series.

At the Annual general Meeting 15 years service Honour awards were presented for the first time.  Sue Pow (Beatty Park), Gordon Medcalf (Melville) and Ron Gray (Thornlie) have provided outstanding officiating service to MSWA and were suitably congratulated.  ‘Tricia Summerfield (Stadium) received an Excellence awards for 10 years’ service whilst Lynne Hunter (Belmont) and Ken Phillips (Mandurah) were presented with 5 year Merit Awards.

We expressed our appreciation and said goodbye to Peter Maloney as he resigned from his position as Director of Swimming however he will continue to be involved at operational level officiating and taking photos!  Subsequent to the meeting the Board appointed Perth City’s Fiona Wilkins to the vacant position and we look forward to Fiona’s expertise and leadership around the Board table.

Finally I would like to wish WA members who are travelling to Hobart next month for the 2015 National Championships the best of luck and we look forward to receiving updates on performances and photos to share.

2014 LiveLighter Novice Swims

Thanks to Maida Vale for conducting their 400m novice event at Lake Leschenaultia in November and once again to Fremantle Masters for running the novice 400m ocean swim in conjunction with their own open water swim in December at South Beach.  The events are a credit to both Maida Vale and Freo Fins who provided great encouragement for all who participated.

Wendy Holtom - Executive Officer

Coach Accreditation  Courses

As advised last year the current Masters Swimming Australia coach accreditation courses will expire on 30th June 2015.  A new Masters Club Coach Course has been developed and written by Fremantle’s Kim Tyler and will be piloted in Melbourne later this month.  If you are interested in coaching at your Club let me know via email as we will commence planning to conduct the new course later in the year.

Meanwhile to those trainee Coaches who have completed the first part (Intro Coach) of the current coaching course accreditation we will attempt to conduct the second part (Club Coach) mid-year and those people will be personally invited once again.

Coach PD Updates

The first PD session for 2015 is being conducted this coming Sunday 15th March by top Masters Coach Kareena Preston for Coaches to update their accreditations and refresh their skills.  A repeat clinic is tentatively planned for May and accredited Coaches are encouraged to express interest now so as not to miss out (maximum of 10 participants).  If as a Coach you have ideas for topics for these workshops and clinics please forward direct to Director of Coaching ‘Tricia Summerfield via .

  2015 LiveLighter All Club Challenge

The meet program and information sheet are on our website . Entries are due to your Club Captains by this Friday 13th March and into MSWA by 20th March. It is not too late to think about spending the weekend at HBF Stadium, or if you are only free one day then enter 4 events for Saturday or Sunday. This event is participation-based and for all abilities. Yes there will be some competitive swimmers but not many. Most members enter to support their Club, see how their training has helped with their fitness and love the relays!

2015 MSA National Championships

It is all happening in Hobart next month.  Good luck to WA members who are travelling over to Tasmania for some swimming and holidays.  Please take photos of your team members and send back when you can for FaceBook posts.

HBF 2014/15 Open Water Series

There are only 2 more events in this season’s series, Saturday 21st March (HBF State OWS at Coogee Beach) and Saturday 4th April (Albany Harbour Swim).  Overall winners and age group winners will be presented with their awards at the Council of Clubs meeting on Tuesday 19th May at the Claremont Masters Clubrooms at HBF Stadium.  Age group winners will be advised by personal email and we hope you will attend.

16th FINA World Masters Championships - Kazan
August 5-16, 2015

MSA Master Licence
During the online registration for entry to the 16th FINA World Masters Championships you will be asked to provide a License number. As MSA does not have a Master Licence, Australian members can put 0 in the field Card Number and leave the box Master license empty.

Proof of Membership
At registration in Kazan, members will be requested to show proof that they are a member of the club they registered for. Please note that following Montreal, where there were unregistered swimmers entered, FINA have clamped down on the procedures and to assist this process, MSA has already provided FINA with a list of our affiliated Clubs.

As a result, prior to departure, each member should apply to MSA for a letter of proof of membership. This can be done by contacting Jane in the MSA office via

A letter will be sent back to you via return email. This may take up to a week for turn around, so we ask that members leave plenty of time to receive it before departure.

  New Office

Masters Swimming WA has a new home at 565 Hay Street Daglish.  We have sub-leased office space with Sports Medicine Australia (WA) on the ground floor.  This is a great arrangement for both organizations as it is anticipated that a rebuild of Sports House will take several years.  Phone and internet yet to be finalized.

  Australian Masters Games

  Technical Officials Update

Congratulations to the MSWA Officiating Team who participated in the annual Technical Officials Workshop in January under the leadership of Technical Education Coordinator Ken Phillips. Host Clubs are encouraged to hold a course at your own pool to get more members into the officiating pathway. Not everyone wants to be a Referee but there are many other roles that members can manage and share the load. Swim meets need officials so please think about assisting your Club and members of MSWA.

  Club News

Westcoast Masters

Westcoast ended the year with a membership of 133.  A good indication of the fact that we must be doing something right. To date we have 111 members registered with a few new members trialling and a few old members still pending.

The club had a good showing at the Rottnest Swim Thru, with over 40 members taking to the waters with more on the shore supporting and holding the towels! Generally, our open water season has gone very well with a few regulars entering into the organised events and a regular group of over 20 taking to the informal Sunday morning swims down at Mullaloo.  Read more..

Once again, Armadale Masters participated in the annual Virtual Rottnest Swim 2015 event with a very pleasing attendance by our eager members. This event has been keenly supported by our members for the past few years and for the last two years we have welcomed Belmont Masters to 'share the lanes' with us. The following is a report from our Coach Coordinator, Heather Croft depicting the day as it unfolded.

The Virtual Rotto Swim has come and gone for another year – phew.

Most people started arriving at the pool at around 5.30 am with a chill in the air but the promise of a beautiful day.  Read more..

A big thank you to all who helped in the preparation and conduct of our Open Water Swim on Australia Day. With the event held at Doddi’s Beach, a lot of work went into preparing the old Yacht Club venue and working on an acceptable and interesting swim course configuration.

Unfortunately, there was a tragic incident with John Fussell (Beatty Park), an experienced swimmer, retiring part way into the first leg of the swim. He made his way to the beach accompanied by a paddler, and then collapsed. John did not recover despite CPR being applied almost immediately after his collapse and subsequent assistance from ambulance officers. I thank all involved in attending to John on the beach.  Read more..
