      Summer e-News 2014

Presidents Piece

Welcome to the 2014 Summer edition of E-News. As we head towards Christmas, and the holiday season, it is a good time to reflect on the tremendous series of pools events that have been well run and attended by many members. They have been friendly and enjoyable events with many new PB’s and records set as well.

Another major achievement this year, and similar to last year, is that our membership numbers have increased again and MSWA still have the largest membership in the Australia. Congratulations to Bay View Saints who account for much of this growth.  BVS started with Masters Swimming 2 years ago and in this short time they have grown their membership base to 90 swimmers.

Out of the water many of you are aware that MSWA suffered the devastation of a fire in our offices at Sport Lotteries House. Unfortunately we have only been able to salvage some important documents.  Most of the office equipment and paperwork has been damaged or lost in the fire. Our administration staff, Wendy and Nadine, are working from home until we have some further clarification on the building as repairs to Sports Lotteries House could take some time.  Staff can still be contacted via their normal e-mail address and phone numbers.

A friendly reminder to members that you must renew your membership in December for insurance coverage from 01 January 2015 and to be eligible for the HBF OWS Series awards. A grace period no longer exists.

Another item that was suggested by clubs, and endorsed at our recent Council of Clubs' meeting, was to change the name of our State Championship in order to encourage more participants. Next year the event will be named the 2015 LiveLighter All Club Challenge.  We hope that this will entice a wide range of swimmers to join this annual gathering of MSWA members.

Again, thankyou to all our wonderful officials for the excellent work at all our events throughout the year.  The valuable time that you give up to support MSWA and the membership is much appreciated by us all. We look forward to your ongoing support in 2015.

On behalf of the Board, Wendy, Nadine and myself I wish members and their families a happy and safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Gary Bradley - President

From the Front Desk

Renewed Your Membership?

Renewing membership & new member registrations procedure for 2015 has been available since Monday 1st December for members to action.  Club Registrars should have provided current members with their personal log-in details (user name & password) via email in the past month to complete renewals on-line between 1st and 31st December.  If not yet received please follow up now with your Club to ensure you have renewed your membership by 31st December. There is no month extension until 31st January anymore.  Also as a reminder manual payments are not permitted. All members are encouraged to check your personal data and update your own personal page when you renew your membership and on a regular basis.

WA member numbers at all-time high, again!
We have done it again.  2014 membership topped 1,642 which is 66 more than we have ever had before (1,576 last year). Congratulations to those Clubs which gained new members during 2014, especially to Bay View Masters which has grown very quickly and clearly is a great model for membership growth.

And more importantly well done to Clubs which retained their members!  Retention of members is an ongoing focus for MSWA however current members must also be congratulated as you are the best promoters of what is good about joining a Masters Club – it is much more fun swimming with a Masters Club than on your own!   Keep on walking the talk and encourage your family and friends to join your Club. Recent surveys have proven that personal introductions have been the main source of membership growth, apart from the ongoing promotional activities conducted by MSWA.

Annual General Meeting

This important meeting is coming up on Tuesday 17th February at the Department of Sport & Recreation (Vincent Street Leederville) at 7.00pm.  Soon Clubs will be asked to send in a short report of Club highlights and achievements for 2014 for MSWA’s Annual Report.  Presentations at the AGM will include the winning Clubs for the 2014 LiveLighter Club Challenge series and the LiveLighter Swim into Spring membership drive.

2015 LiveLighter  Pool Events Calendar

The LiveLighter Club Challenge series and Distance Meets calendar is nearly finalised and will be produced this month for distribution to members via their Clubs in early January. It will then go onto our website as usual.

Wendy Holtom - Executive Officer

LiveLighter Novice Swim

Fremantle Masters is again conducting this event on behalf of MSWA in conjunction with their Fremantle Ports Swim Thru on Saturday 13th December.  If you are unsure of entering the longer1600m event  how about starting with the 400m novice swim.  It is not a race, just a leisurely swim around marker buoys under the watchful eyes of surf lifesavers and Fremantle Masters members.  Breakfast is available and spot prizes too.

HBF 2014/15 Open Water Swims Series

The first two events of the summer season were successfully held at Lake Leschenaultia by Maida Vale Masters, and the BBB River swim hosted by Melville Masters, last month.  The Fremantle Ports Swim Thru is the next one to enter on the HBF series.  Members are encouraged to support the Masters club-run events which gives you automatic entry into the HBF OWS series with prizes awarded to age group winners at the end of the season.  Get points for your Club too by participating in these great events!  More information via our website .  Don’t forget you must be a registered member by the day of the event to gain points in the HBF 2014/15 OWS Series.

HBF 2015 State OWS

The annual event is confirmed for SATURDAY 21st March at Coogee Beach and will again be coordinated by Somerset Masters on behalf of MSWA with event and water support from Coogee Beach SLSC.  Registrations will be via Club Captains and Team Manager entry process as usual.  Look out for entry information which will be on the website in the new year and emailed to clubs for members around the same time.  Check out who is going to swim from your Club and make a morning of it. It is a great venue.  Breakfast after the swim is always very good value.

2015 Country Correspondence Carnival

MSWA coordinates this event for country Clubs and it will be conducted in January and February 2015.  Country members are encouraged to participate in the organised meets during these months especially in preparation for the LiveLighter 2015 All Club Challenge to be held in Perth over the weekend of 28th and 29th March at HBF Stadium (formerly Challenge Stadium).

Masters National Accredited Coaching Courses

For any potential new Coaches you will now have to wait until later in 2015 when the new accredited course will be available to start on the coach education pathway.  Once every 4 years the Coaching Courses have to be reaccredited with the Australian Sports Commission after gaining approval from the peak aquatics body (Swimming Australia).

MSA will undertake to produce a new course, of which the current courses will form the basis, for implementation mid 2015.

LiveLighter 2015 All Club Challenge

28th/29th March
The meet program was provided recently with the eAlert and is now on our website.  Final information on entry fees and function costs including entry forms will be available in the new year.  Most important though - country Clubs should be organising members to commit and book accommodation and transport now.

Congratulations to Ryan Whiddett, from Kwinana Masters, who won his age group in the 2014 MSA Swim Series.  Ryan dived into the inaugural MSA National Swim Series and competed in six of the eight Meets and won the Men’s 18-24 age group. The introduction of the MSA Swim Series this year, has allowed Ryan the opportunity to use swimming as an excuse to see Australia and we congratulate him for his enthusiasm and support of the Series. Ryan observed: “There is no better atmosphere than a Masters meet, the competition in the fun and relaxed environment is just a huge attraction. I swim with Masters because I can keep fit and be motivated to keep healthy with a group of likeminded people. ”

Congratulations to Elizabeth Edmondson from Stadium Masters who is among the Paralympic greats celebrating 50 years since Tokyo 1964. Click here to read more.

Carine Masters Club News

We attended the popular Beatty Park LiveLighter Club challenge.  We always enjoy the short course format which allows for a few exciting “splash and dash” events.  Our team of eight swimmers managed to gain 80 points placing us 6th amongst the 12 clubs present. We think our relay team did very well too so we came home happy with our results. However, it is the camaraderie and catching up will all our swimming friends that we enjoy most. There was a certain amount of sadness amongst swimmers that day as we remembered the lovely Kerensa Allason, one of Beatty Park’s most active members who sadly passed away shortly before the carnival..

Stadium Masters Club News

Announcing Stadium Masters!

In September we formally changed our club name from Stadium Snappers Masters Swimming Club to Stadium Masters Swimming Club. The idea came from our youngest member, who thought that Stadium Masters portrayed a more “professional” organisation. Since foundation in 1992 our club name has included the name of our training venue, originally the Superdrome, hence our club code was, and still is, WSU. When the venue became known as the Stadium, we changed our name accordingly. Now, in removing our nickname from our official name, we are consistent with other MSWA clubs.

Westcoast Masters Club News

Never a dull moment at Westcoast. We have ended the year with 132 members, most of those still swimming regularly.

We had a six of our men going over to Alice Springs for the Masters Games, they came back with a heap of medals and quite a few records amongst them.  The stories of their trip over and back were rather amusing and amazing - although repair bills were not discussed. Gladly they all made it back in one piece.

Bunbury Club News

Bunbury Stingers 25th Year Celebration

On Saturday November 1st past and present Stingers and their partners converged on Noovoh restaurant to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bunbury Stingers existence.  It was a beautiful day and the setting, looking out over the Back Beach, was perfect given the origins of the club and the great affinity many of our members have for open water swimming.  The room was decorated with club trophies and photos on display.  This prompted much discussion of glory days gone by and the good times we have had over the last 25 years.
