      Spring e-News

Presidents Piece

Welcome to the Spring edition of e-news with the important news that HBF has agreed to extend their sponsorship for MSWA’s open water program for a further year.  For their contribution HBF has naming rights to our State OWS event, State Masters OWS Series and the 2014/15 OWS Calendar.

HBF is excited to promote the HBF Masters Open Water Swim Series as much as possible and will include all these events on their annual HBF Events Calendar and also provide discount to HBF members in all Masters events.  HBF will additionally provide all Masters members with a magnet (for your fridge) promoting the Masters Series in the next month via your Club in order to encourage Masters members in particular to choose to swim in the Masters Series events before others.

Apart from the HBF Masters State OWS at Coogee Beach which will operate exactly as it has in previous years (MSA OWS Rules & Sanction), there are some important changes which will apply to the other 7 events and the Host Clubs involved.

These changes include:

  • All 7 events will be sanctioned locally by MSWA only (no MSA involvement).
  • All 7 events will be insured locally by MSWA with policies in place for both public liability & personal accident.
  • All 7 events will be open to all Masters members and non-members, with a minimum age of 10 years on the day of the event.
  • All 7 events will be officiated in accordance with a simplified set of rules known as the MSWA Local OWS Rules 2014-15.

MSWA Local OWS Rules

A copy of the newly agreed MSWA Local OWS Rules will be loaded on our website and has been emailed to Clubs for members. The MSWA Local OWS Rules reflect the consensus reached at the Host OWS Clubs meeting in June that, where possible, rules should be made simpler and easier for swimmers, Host Clubs and officials to use.

The best example is in relation to swimwear where current MSA swimwear rules have been relaxed to promote participation which will make it much easier for Technical Officials. The only swimwear exception relates to wetsuits, which may be worn but there will be a separate wetsuit category not eligible to win prizes.

Now that our pool events are nearly completed for the year I hope the support from HBF is enough encouragement for swimmers to get into the swim for the OWS series. Our LiveLighter pool events have again been a tremendous success with good numbers and the culmination of winter pool events being the Golden Groper State Relay carnival which attracted a record number of swimmers.

Again this year our membership numbers are higher and with our LiveLighter Spring into Swimming promotion in full swing numbers should grow even more. Thank you to all clubs for your ongoing support in not only attracting new members but also working to retain current members.

Acknowledgement must go to our wonderful Technical Officials who have assisted at pool events and will again front up to officiate at our HBF OWS series this summer. This group of officials should be recognized for the time they volunteer for the greater good of other members and I encourage members to thank them for their voluntary work when at carnivals or OWS events.

Members are reminded that renewals of 12 month memberships for 2015 must be completed in December (and prior to 1st January 2015) ie. before swimming in Masters activities and events in January as otherwise you will be unfinancial and not covered for personal accident insurance.  There is no “soft entry” to the year in January anymore.

Having members regularly update their own data through the “portal” on their own page is the aim – have you checked your data page details to ensure it has your up to date personal details?  Is your email address correct?  Are your emergency details current?  Have you advised your Coach or Club if you have a medical issue, this is most important and will be confidential.

From the National Admin Workshop last month we were asked to advise Clubs and members of the following:

  • MSA will email reminders direct to members to renew their membership in December, as members will be unfinancial and not insured from 1st January 2015
  • Clubs are encouraged to also send renewal reminders via email template and to monitor and mandate membership renewals during December
  • Those members who have joined since 1st September 2014 are current to 31st December 2015.

Member numbers in WA have once again reached an all-time high, with 1,528 members as at 28th August, even before the membership drive period in Spring.  MSWA is thrilled with this success as our ongoing promotions for new members is always directed to for potential members to “find your local Club, check out the Club website or make contact to find out when and where and have a go”.  However loss of members is still an issue so we encourage all Clubs to look after new members to ensure they feel nurtured and then they will stay!  As a member you can assist with this nurturing of new members to keep them.

As part of our push to encourage more members to participate in the annual LiveLighter State Championships we receive many comments from members that they are not good enough to swim at State Championships.  How can we get across to members that the event is just one big interclub meet cum Club Challenge?  One suggestion is to change the event title.

We welcome ideas from members in order to promote more participation.  We have conducted several surveys over the years without much change to the format.  Send us your thoughts via email and/or make sure your Club Captain brings any ideas to the Club Captains meeting on Saturday 20th Sept where the 2015 LiveLighter Pool Events Calendar will be discussed.

Wendy Holtom - Executive Officer

Intro Coach Course

We are about to conduct the main part of coach accreditation on 20th September (Club Coach Course) however I have received a couple of enquiries regarding the next ICC.  If you are interested in learning how to Coach and to be able to assist at your Club please email me with an Expression of Interest by 19th September.  If enough confirmed participants we might be able to conduct another before the end of 2014.

HBF 2014/15 Open Water Swims Calendar

All members should have received a calendar by now as the calendars have been with Clubs for personal distribution to members since 19th August.  Do chase one up when next you swim at a Club session if not yet received.  Metro aquatic centres received their allocation for the general open water swimming community in the first week of September and bundles will be sent to other organisations and country pools soon.  We encourage members to support the OWS events conducted by MSWA Clubs where possible and additionally to be a part of the HBF Masters Open Water Series as HBF members will receive a discount on entry fees.

Mandurah Australia Day Swim

As further encouragement to support the Australia Day Swim at Mandurah MSWA will provide a special prize for one entrant as part of a raffle draw.  Please promote to your members.

Masters Swimming Australia (MSA) Insurance

For all events, training sessions and activities promoted (emails, websites, announcements) and conducted by your Club as a member you are covered for personal accident insurance through MSA - a summary of which is attached FYI.  State-run events such as LiveLighter State Championships and HBF State OWS are also covered under MSA insurance.

However the exception as highlighted in the President’s Piece in this edition of ENews, is now the OWS events conducted by our 7 Host Clubs (Maida Vale, Melville, Fremantle, Claremont, Mandurah, Cockburn and Albany) which are now covered under a separate insurance cover taken out by MSWA.

MSA 2014 Swim Series

Some WA members are doing well at present in this series.  Check out how you are going by visiting the Results Portal on the MSWA website and clicking "Swim Series".

Technical Officiating Courses

Technical Education Coordinator Ken Phillips is keen to conduct specific officiating workshops or courses at your Club.  It is getting to the stage that the number of qualified Technical Officials has decreased to a point that the conduct of pool meets will be in jeopardy unless more members participate in the officiating pathway after achieving timekeeping accreditation.  It is not difficult and can be very enjoyable as you can swim as well as officiate at most pool meets.  Please consider your Club’s needs and how you can help as a volunteer official - let Ken know via .  We need you!

For your information MSWA has a Marketing and Development plan which underpins our annual Operational Plan and the 2012-15 Strategic Plan.  It includes ongoing membership growth projects which are coordinated by our part-time Project Coordinator Nadine Georgiades:

  • Cross-promotions with Rottnest Channel Swim Association – identified Clubs (12) which support and have experience and expertise for Rottnest Channel swimmers are listed on the RSCA website (Events/Training & Preparation/Join a Club) and a specific flyer was provided to attendees at the RSCA Swimmers Seminar last month.  A membership growth advert will again be included in the 2015 Rottnest Channel race-book to encourage membership of MSWA Clubs
  • Cross-promotions with Triathlon WA - a specific flyer was provided to TriWA for their newsletter in August to encourage Masters membership via website link
  • LiveLighter Spring into Swimming project – we have provided Clubs with promotional material and suggestions for Clubs (which wish to grow) to conduct activities or displays in Spring to take advantage of the discounted 16-month membership fees to gain new members.  Current members can do their bit by being advocates and encouraging family or friends to join up as “it is much more fun swimming with a Club than on your own”
  • Sandgropers Club – promotions continue for our “virtual” Club which is now open to metro swimmers as well as country swimmers, however we still encourage membership of our traditional Clubs as first and best option.
2015 LiveLighter State Championships

As confirmed in recent Club communications we will conduct the 2015 LiveLighter State Championships on the weekend of 28th/29th March at HBF Stadium in Short Course format so members travelling to the 2015 National Championships in Hobart (8-11 April) will have the chance to have trial SC swims.

This option is provided where possible every five or so years as part of the philosophy of holding the event prior to Nationals Championships, in Short Course mode and in country venues to accommodate different needs of members and Clubs.  This weekend date is not ideal, with the 2015 HBF State OWS being held the week prior, however we hope that members will consider participating in both events, so book the dates in your diaries now.

Venues West

At a recent stakeholder forum the CEO of VenuesWest David Etherton outlined refurbishments planned for HBF Stadium, and other VenuesWest managed facilities.

Find out what is happening via .

2015 National Masters Championships

Interested members should be sourcing travel and accommodation now and regularly visiting the MSA and Tasmanian Masters websites to check on event information and updates.   A great option for members when only one or 2 travelling from Clubs, is to join up as Black Swans!

Black Swans Club

For your information the Black Swans Club was established in 2008 for WA swimmers (water polo players or triathletes) who did not belong to a traditional MSWA Club but wanted to swim at the World Championships here in Perth.

Since then we have tried to re-establish the Club for members who might be the only one or two members from their Club traveling to National or International meets and would like to swim in relays with other WA members as a second claim member of Black Swans.  Or another option is to join a larger participating Club as a second-claim member to be part of their travelling team.  It is a great option to have all WA members together and supporting each other at National or World swim meets and enjoy relay swims.  So if any member is interested for Hobart 2015 please let me know by 31st October 2014.

Vorgee 2015
The new Vorgee 2015 Features and Benefits guide has now been released and is attached.
HBF 2015 State OWS

This event will be held on Saturday 21st March again at Coogee Beach and will be run under MSA OWS rules and sanctioned by MSA for insurance purposes.  It is important that all members understand that the relaxation of swimwear rules for the 7 Club-run events under the new MSWA Local OWS Rules does not apply to the HBF 2015 State OWS.

2014 FINA World Masters in Montreal

Carine Masters Club News

The winter ills have taken their toll on our members and it has meant that we have not participated as much as we would have liked in the events of the past months.  Training sessions have suffered from lack of numbers too although some hardy members have managed to keep swimming all through winter.

A great day was had by more than 270 swimmers at the annual Golden Groper State Relay Championships – hosted by our very own Claremont Masters.  Huge thanks to all the swimmers and particularly the non-swimming volunteers who helped make the day so successful – Tom Brown, Alison Farmer, Jenny Williams, Siobhan Durkan, Peter Jones, David Hodby, Frank Glass, Anna’s friend Cally and Hannah’s partner Ollie.  We have had a number of emails from participating clubs thanking and congratulating us on a fun and well-run day.  Our marshalling team in particular received huge accolades… what an awesome job you all did to ensure everyone was where they were meant to be.

Although only a small contingent went to States, we are very proud of the results they achieved. Well done to Brad Smith and Kieren Lawrenson who both won their overall age group sections in the pool.  Open Water series winners were announced as well - congratulations go to Brad (again) and Erin Spooner for winning their respective age groups. Obviously our members focus is not on pool competition, as again we had a very small entry for Gropers Relay carnival – 22 members took part on the day, lots of fun and hard work from all involved.
