     Autumn 2014 e-News

Welcome to our Autumn edition of the e-News

President's Piece

Welcome to the autumn edition of MSWA’s E-news. I hope all members are in peak fitness after a summer of outstanding HBF open water events and that you are focused on our upcoming HBF State Open Water swim at Coogee Beach.  I know many members are looking to participate in the swim while some clubs are eyeing off the team and individual titles. Good luck to all.

We had a large turnout of members including Life Members and club representatives at the Council of Clubs meeting and AGM in February.  Apart from the normal administration items at these meetings it also gave us the chance to recognise some outstanding contributions by some of our members and recognise clubs that have been performing very well.

Bunbury achieved the highest increase in members in the 2013 LiveLighter Spring into Swimming membership growth project with Belmont as runners up. Belmont, Claremont, Leeming and Maida Vale also received awards for overall points and improvement factors in the 2013 LiveLighter Club Challenge Series. Peter Maloney from Melville headed the individual awards receiving Life Membership for his outstanding contributions to MSWA over many years. Thanks Peter.  Heather Adams (Armadale) and Warren Cassidy (Fremantle) received Excellence awards for 10 years’ service while Kaye Bolger (Albany) and Elena Nesci (Claremont) were presented with 5 year Merit Awards.

Lilian Hadley and Sandra Mutch were also recognised for their outstanding and long contributions over eleven years with MSWA as outgoing State Records Officer and Director of Recording respectively, as they stepped down from these positions.  Sandra will continue in operational roles thankfully. It is very heart-warming to see and be in the company of these volunteers who give so much to our organisation and I thanks each of them again.

Finally I would like to appeal to Clubs and members of our ongoing need to have more technical officials as the number of swim meets increase and our ageing officials retire.  MSWA via our officials offer outstanding and ongoing training and support for all new and current officials. The camaraderie, encouragement and professionalism I see within our current officials ranks would make it an easy transition for any members thinking of joining this current group. Your help would assist our MSWA greatly.

Education of club members on Masters Swimming Rules

This is a reminder to clubs that all our meets are run under the Masters Swimming Australia Rules, which the officials apply fairly and cannot ignore an infringement, while other swimmers comply with the rules.

It is up to the clubs and coaches to educate their swimmers on the correct rules and procedures for carnivals before attending any meet.  Carnivals can be a stressful environment and bad habits will come out.  Swimmers must know the new starting procedures to avoid disqualifications, as it is too late to be shown how to start, and what you can and can’t do, on the day.

The LiveLighter Club Challenge meets have a more relaxed feel than the LiveLighter State Championships but are held under the same Masters Swimming rules and the officials must apply these rules at all sanctioned events. LiveLighter Club Challenge meets are, after all, part of an awards system for the season.

A reminder that swimwear rules have been enforced since 2011 and clubs should be responsible for ensuring that their members are aware of the rules and that there are no exceptions.  If the club captains have a concern with a new swimmer, they should see the Referee before the event commences. Usually the Referee will make some small allowances for them.

If you have issues with any official please let the Meet Referee on the day know or contact the Director of Swimming Peter Maloney.

Officials cannot ignore an infringement, while other swimmers comply with the rules.

Rules can be downloaded from Master Swimming Australia:

Good luck to all our members competing this weekend in our 2014 HBF State Open Water Swim.
LiveLighter Super Clinic - Saturday 10th May

After the success of the inaugural LiveLighter Super Clinic in November 2013 we're pleased to be running another Super Clinic on Saturday 10th May.

The LiveLighter State Championships Preparation Super Clinic will aim to get participants ready to tackle pool events by focussing on:-

  • effective race day warm ups and stretching
  • how to pace your races
  • sprint technique
  • starts, turns and finishes

Four experienced coaches (Kareena Preston, Jon Haines, Sally Bell & Elena Nesci) will be coordinating the sessions with ALL standards of swimmers encouraged to attend.  Swimmers will be graded into appropriate lanes. There will also be limited places for coaches to attend to observe from pool deck but we are encouraging interested coaches to participate by taking part in the actual swimming to gain a better understanding of the processes being presented.

The flier/registration form is attached for you to register so you can achieve your best possible results at the State Champs.
