  Malvern Marlins 22nd Interclub
Saturday February 8, 2014

The first pool event for 2014, the Malvern Marlins 22nd Interclub event took place on a 40 degree day in February. Held at the Harold Holt Pool, the Marlins hosted 132 members from 12 clubs and one member from Tasmania.
CLICK HERE to view the results.

In 2014,  the club has introduced a new trophy to be awarded at the Interclub each year, to the swimmer whose 200m IM time is closest to the FINA world record in their age-group, as calculated through the Meet Manager recording package. This award has been produced to honour the 50 year anniversary of Patrick Devine’s National record-breaking swim for the 220yard I.M. in November 1964. The winner of the inaugural ‘Patrick Devine 200IM Trophy’ was Craig Williamson from Nunawading Orcas.

Congratulations to all who competed and to the Malvern Marlins on a well run event.

FINA Rule Changes

FINA updated the Butterfly and Breaststroke rules last year to require that the hands must be separated on the touch at the turns and finish. MSA had been following  the SAL interpretation of "separated", which required a clear separation between the hands on the touch.

FINA have since issued a 'clarification' of separated hands for the recent rule changes, with a very clear and well structured document. CLICK HERE to read the document.

In essence, it is not necessary to see space between the hands on the touch. Incidental contact at the fingers is not a concern, but the hands cannot be stacked one on top of the other. Our officials will be interpreting the rule according to this clarification at future meets.
